I’m proud of Sen. Thom Tillis. But I’m even prouder of Thom Tillis the person.

Thank you, Thom, for everything you’ve done for me, and so many others.

He supported me and countless others not for personal gain or public recognition, but because he genuinely cared. His acts of kindness were never publicized, done simply out of compassion.

I share these moments to highlight that while recent press and social media focuses on Thom Tillis the politician, they often overlook Thom Tillis the person. I’m deeply grateful for his political work serving North Carolina, but what truly defines Thom for me is his quiet, selfless friendship.

That same year, during a caucus meeting, I mentioned to Thom that a freshman Republican was struggling after being criticized by a local website. Without hesitation, Thom sought out the legislator and spent the next hour listening and offering thoughtful counsel.

His accessibility and willingness to offer advice stood out. In late 2013, I recall a freshman Democrat excitedly sharing that he’d just had a 90-minute conversation with Thom about life.

Instead, he gave me a candid breakdown of what it took to serve in Raleigh, the time, the role, and the sacrifices involved.

As a freshman in the NC House, Thom remained a friend & mentor. Despite his role, he always made time to guide me & many other legislators, Republicans and Democrats alike.

Fast forward to 2012, Thom had become a prominent figure in North Carolina politics, leading Republicans to a majority in the NC House and serving as Speaker. When I called him that May to discuss running for State House, he didn’t push or encourage me to run, despite what some claimed.

He had no obligation to invest in me, but I soon realized Thom’s motivation: he wanted our community to thrive, and by supporting me, he was serving the place he loved.

During my first year, Thom mentored me, helping me grow as a legislator and a person. We’d meet for breakfast at Bob Evans on Sam Furr Road, where he patiently listened to my concerns and offered advice.

Unlike other candidates who dismissed me, Thom stood out for his warmth.

A few weeks later, when Thom chose not to run for the Huntersville Town Board, I unexpectedly won my first public office that fall.

I'm not sure she's aware of BlueSky yet.
