This is lovely, but I've seen it only rarely in the twenty years I've lived here in upstate NY.
Filling the same ecological niche (sunny/dry requirements) we have LOTS of plantain-leaved pussy-toes (Antennaria plantaginifolia), also a host for the Painted Lady. Makes a nice native ground cover.
Plantain-leaved pussy-toe plant in flower: growing from a rosette of rough basal leaves, it reaches 6 to 12 inches high. It gained its name because of the shape of the soft little white bundles of florets, rather like a cat's toes.
