so when i see people complain about predictability i usually take that to mean theres nothing else going on. no stakes. no gravity. no reason to be invested in what is taking place at all. knowing how it ends stands out because its just a sequence of events with nothing to show for it

as further evidence of this lets look at the inverse: a big moment that comes out of nowhere because it was not foreshadowed, perhaps to the point that it actually makes no sense. this is unquestionably a surprise. it is also commonly complained about, so predictability cant be the issue

see heres the thing: if a plot thread has any level of foreshadowing, there will always exist the chance that you the reader/viewer can guess where it will lead. if anything its your reward for paying attention

im not saying theyre being duplicitous or anything its more likely that something else is at work and they cant put their finger on it so predictability becomes the whipping boy
