I think it rly comes down to the ability to convey a idea through visual expression, the more convincing you can convey a idea using the least amount of elements I feel would be considered a improvement, it'd why two styles can. Convey the same idea and both be equally valid.

I felt the same way about the early internet, i was born in 2000 so i wasn't rly there for the earliest parts of the internet, but i still like the aesthetic and idea of it being a more free and restricted place compared to today.
