Exactly. The show does great work making Claire truly not ableist, pro reproductive freedom, and sex positive in ways DG is decidedly not. CB’s tiny acting choice in A Malcolm where C takes both Fergus’s hands because they are *both him* is so beautiful. Why have S8 step back from any of that?

Given the ways the show is so much better about Fergus’s disability than the books are in Season 5 (his speech in the snakebite episode is perfect) keeping The Worst Storyline of Book 9 in S8 is just baffling.

The result of that “all ed majors have a second major” thing at my undergrad meant that all the future teachers I knew were interested in other topics and had research skills, and those are the things undergrad business majors don’t generally get.

I might be willing to settle for the situation at my public liberal arts undergrad, where you had to apply to the business school after you did a few semesters in arts and sciences for pre-reqs, and add on a requirement for a second major in something else (which my school required for ed majors).

I think you’ve hit on wby so many of us with visible disabilities turn to writing or visual art and other media: it’s a shot at being heard on our own terms when people can’t see our bodies.

Yeah, academia relies on a cultish notion of vocation so that talking about the abuse and labor exploitation is gauche and proof you don’t “love your work enough.” And God forbid you mention how many grad students are the children of PhDs and lawyers so they know the unspoken social codes.
