I suppose it's a bit like how stars are usually a few light years away from each other, but once every few tens or hundreds of millions of years they'll randomly pass much closer, within a few thousand AU of each other, just by their trajectories coincidentally passing near one another.

Reminds me of one of the times I was flying to Lanzarote and on the Atlantic stretch we had a close encounter with another plane passing above us.
Couldn't have been more than a few thousand feet in it.
