Canada has recognized Palestine. Finally. It feels like a tiny victory. But let's also put it in context. 140 other UN member states already recognize Palestine.

It is meaningful in Canadian FP terms & represents a shift. Canada has been more than a holdout, it has even been an obstacle at the UN.

I just spoke to a librarian and they are spending time trying to find fake citations - they are being given pages of fake references to find via inter-library loan
Again, digital asbestos - quick to produce, but so much cost and labour to clean-up.

Yet another demonstration that AI is not a labor-saving device; it merely displaces the cleanup and mitigation (in realms where care, caution, accuracy, etc., actually matter) onto other people

Increase in productivity since 1979: 87%

Increase in hourly pay since 1979: 32%

Just so happens that ~25% of workers were unionized in 1979. Today? 10%.

As unions declined, the super-rich have taken a larger share of wealth generated by labor. We must build back union power.

My column in the new issue of @thenation.com, in which I argue that liberals who are finally acknowledging that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza must atone for nearly two years of complicity.
To Those Who Have Just Awakened to the Horrors in Gaza
Yes, we should welcome the latecomers to the fight against genocide, but there also needs to be accountability.

When the classroom is a tent and the dream is survival. In Gaza, students study by flashlight, under bombs, and through grief. This powerful essay by Taqwa al-Wawi honors their defiance and asks: how do you dream when your school no longer exists?

This must stop.
Israel must stop this mass starvation.
Our lawmakers must do more.

“Since AFP was founded in August 1944, some of our journalists were killed in conflict, others were wounded or made prisoner, but there is no record of us ever having had to watch our colleagues starving to death.”
A statement from AFP news agency warning that Gaza journalists are dying from hunger.

The masks are coming off: human values and international law seem to count for nothing anymore. This was already evident when the world did nothing to stop the genocide in Gaza. As you read this, Israel is still killing civilians who are already displaced & starving.
