Power asymmetries among CRINK countries are evident in their trade relations. At over $245 billion in 2024, trade between China and Russia overwhelmingly surpasses bilateral trade between all other CRINK pairs.

Not all areas of cooperation have shown clear signs of strengthening. China and Russia often align their votes on UN Security Council issues, but this alignment has decreased slightly since 2022. In November 2024, the two voted opposite each other—the first instance in decades.
November 25, 2025 at 8:00 PM
Growing security and economic cooperation among CRINK countries has been supported by engagements between top leaders and diplomats. Since January 2022, political leaders and diplomats from China and Russia have met nearly 50 times, significantly outpacing other CRINK pairs.

North Korea and Iran have gone the furthest in supporting Russia’s war by sending both weapons and military trainers and troops. China has withheld lethal weapons and troop deployments, but its dual-use exports and economic support have been crucial to Russia’s war.
November 25, 2025 at 8:00 PM
Strengthening CRINK security ties since the Ukraine war are also evident in frequent joint military exercises. CRINK countries average nearly 10 joint exercises per year since 2022, a major uptick from earlier: From 2003 to 2021, CRINK averaged just over three exercises per year.
November 25, 2025 at 8:00 PM
Weapons transfers have emerged as another key area of CRINK cooperation since the start of the Ukraine war. Historically, Russia was a major arms exporter, but it has shifted from an arms supplier to other CRINK countries to being a net arms importer from North Korea and Iran.
November 25, 2025 at 8:00 PM
China has also been crucial to sustaining Russia’s war in Ukraine by providing dual-use goods with both military and commercial applications. Soon after Russia’s invasion, China ramped up exports to Russia of many “high priority” dual-use goods to help Russian industries.
November 25, 2025 at 8:00 PM
Energy has become a key area of economic cooperation among CRINK countries, especially since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. China has ramped up oil purchases from Russia and Iran, offering a much-needed economic lifeline for the two countries facing Western sanctions.
November 25, 2025 at 8:00 PM
Power asymmetries among CRINK countries are evident in trade relations. China-Russia trade overwhelmingly surpasses bilateral trade between all other CRINK pairs. North Korea-Russia trade has seen significant wartime increases since 2022 but remains much smaller in comparison.
November 25, 2025 at 8:00 PM
CRINK countries share a common goal of undermining Western influence, but significant differences lead to notable asymmetries of power. For example, China’s economy is roughly 1,100 times the size of North Korea’s, and Iran is geographically isolated from the other three countries.
November 25, 2025 at 8:00 PM
China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea share a mutual desire to challenge U.S. and Western influence, note @chinapower.csis.org, @erep.csis.org, and @mideast.csis.org experts. Collectively, the CRINK countries can bring to bear considerable economic and military power on the world stage.
November 25, 2025 at 8:00 PM
China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea (CRINK) are increasingly cooperating to challenge the U.S. and global governance. New charts show how China and Russia anchor CRINK cooperation and how the war in Ukraine has accelerated CRINK alignment.

With the USS Gerald R. Ford's arrival, U.S. naval presence in the Caribbean reaches a level unseen since the Cold War. The aircraft carrier’s arrival suggests a shift from an anti-dug smuggling campaign to one that includes undermining the Maduro regime.
