That's not my experience but maybe they've changed something. My understanding is that Discord doesn't allow multiple accounts and they use phone number, credit cards etc, to prevent that. I see no reason to allow them to be able to identify me across multiple diverse communities.

I guess Matrix would be the obvious choice. It's open source, actually separate servers, transparancy and portability.

General question - why Discord? I don't want them to have my phone number and track me between servers/channels. But maybe it is precisely that gate-keeper role that makes them attractive to people managing these communities?

Use Signal, it's better than just about anything else broadly available. But it's good to know it's limitations.
Your phone and others are the weak link (not signal).
1.Use handles instead of numbers
2.Use disappearing messages
4.What you write may end up on a seized/compromised phone so be careful

Sounds interesting and important, I just don't have time to read it because I'm on Bluesky..

Honestly though, I'd really like it to not be behind a paywall.

You may be willing to give the government extraordinary powers, but only if using them is hard and visible, enabling independent external oversight.

But not want to grant them if it's just at a click and a pinkie promise.

I suggest the infrastructure also matters, in addition to having the data.

The tension between friction and bureaucracy is part of institutional trust.

You want the fire department to be able to break down your door to save lives, but you don't want every government agent have the key to every house.

It's not only the infrastructure, but 7ts interesting to see how he side-steps the question of a too efficient government and handwaves away the risks with a handwaves to internal oversight and democracy.
