We launched #HonestChurch in Aug 22 to encourage greater honesty about the true welcome that LGBTQ+ people receive in a church. The campaign has grown since then, but the aim remains the same: empower students to find a church where they can thrive, & ask churches to be honest about their beliefs 💒
A translucent rainbow goes from left to right across the image, with the Honest Church logo and words reading "LGBTQ History Month: Honest Church". The Honest Church campaign was started by SCM in 2022 with one simple aim. We wanted churches to be honest about their welcome of LGBTQ+ people. The purpose of the campaign is not to try to convince churches to be more inclusive, but simply to promote the honesty and openness that will help young people, in particular, to find a church in which they feel comfortable. We believe it’s as important for churches that hold a conservative line on LGBTQ+ relationships to be honest as it is for those that are more progressive. As part of the campaign we produced resources, including a toolkit to support people who want to ask about a church’s LGBTQ+ welcome but aren’t sure how to open up the conversation. The toolkit suggests questions you may wish to ask, either at your current church or when searching for a church, as well as suggestions for church leaders to improve the current welcome they offer, and how to communicate this more effectively. In 2023, we joined forces with Women and the Church (WATCH) to expand the campaign to include honesty around women’s roles in church, and in 2024 we ran a pop-up for Disability History Month which focused on honesty around disability access. When you go Edwin Morgan When you go, if you go, and I should want to die, there's nothing I’d be saved by more than the time you fell asleep in my arms in a trust so gentle I let the darkening room drink up the evening, till rest, or the new rain lightly roused you awake. A little wildness please, a little howling to be heard from the chalets, a circling of yellow eyes at Aviemore. That legend much discredited, of the following of the sledges, let us test it in the Cairngorms, in the winter playgrounds with their merry cries, in the white paths through the forest. It would be good to get not a few scalps to crawl with fear when they hear that eerie arctic song as one by one the muzzles lift and open in the dark, and the dark is long.
