I seem to have a bunch of new followers so I figured I'd say hello! I'm Dan. I'm a Polaris ILS administrator, systems librarian, database admin, data analyst, podcaster, cyberpunk, and professional weirdo.

Sometimes I swear. I hope y'all are okay with that.

Today marks the 154th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire. Nine square kilometers of Chicago burned to ground.

As the city rebuilt, they decided to create a public library and, on January 1, 1873, the Chicago Public Library opened up in a water tank that survived the inferno.
Book room in the Old Water Tank
Measuring 58 feet in diameter and 28 feet high, the Book Room in the water tank was originally able to accommodate 3,157 volumes. Its most important feature, however, was that it was fireproof.

Man, I am so sorry. The way this went down with B&T was absurd, and totally unnecessary. 😔
cyberpunklibrarian.bsky.social
Yeah, ReaderLink called off the acquisition and that was pretty much their last hope of pulling out of the spiral. Word on the wires is that B&T is drowning in debt.

Baker & Taylor appears to be shutting down. A post on the r/libraries subreddit from an employee of B&T breaks the news and there appear to be other employees in the comments confirming the situation.

This is a song called Megalodon with Laser Eyes. Within the lyrics, they address the human condition, and what it means to live, and to love that which you cannot have.

No, not really. The contents are exactly as the title suggests.

Since this episode was originally a presentation, I threw together a video with the accompanying slide deck if that's something you'd want to see. Check it out over on my PeerTube channel. (It's on YouTube too, but feh...)

Hell yeah! A new tune from Le Vent du Nord dropped today!

I assume that this will be one of the tracks on their upcoming album, Voisinages. But in the meantime, I'm gonna be adding this catchy little tune to my daily rotation!

Yes! This cool idea I have for a library project is working out! The code is coming together, only a few small errors, so no big issues! Holy crap! Look at that! It even takes a CSV import! Hell yeah!

Now all I need to do is make it... print... properly.

It is the year of our goddess 2025, and almost every SQL Server IDE app out there can save the results of a query as an Excel spreadsheet.

Every app except Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
cyberpunklibrarian.bsky.social
There's this library server where access to SQL Server has fallen off the VPN.

Which means I have to login to the server.

And use SSMS.

When I use SSMS for basic SQL and data work, I feel like I'm hammering nails with a circular saw. It works, but it certainly isn't the right tool for the job. 📚

In this society, and in this America.... Whenever you encounter a problem that just won't go away, a problem that no other country seems to have, and it's a problem that politicians just can't solve.

Then your problem is capitalism. Follow the money, Bob.
The school shooting industry is worth billions — and it keeps growing
The effort to keep schools safe from mass shooters has ballooned into a multibillion dollar industry. Companies are selling school districts assurance with high-tech products.

I am continually wanting to grab certain people by their shirts and shake them while screaming THANKS FOR NOTICING THAT WE CALLED THIS ONE, HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THAT WE MIGHT BE RIGHT ABOUT OTHER THINGS TOO

So I'm grumpy that we seem to be once again creating a dynamic in our party where the people who got to the right answer sooner are marginalized for doing so, while people who were wrong get credit for changing their minds once it became obvious they were wrong. (See also NAFTA, Iraq War, Gaza.)

I need you to understand something.

The thing I need you to understand is that librarians like these are heroes. They've been slandered. They've been libeled. They've been threatened. They've been put in harm's way.

And they keep fighting. 📚

And ya know, ya know what I was thinking? Just yesterday I was thinking to myself "Dan, you know what you need more of in your cross-platform open source web browser? You need more Microsoft and more AI. That's truly what's missing from Firefox."

My dear, lovely, wonderful library people:

I need y'all to do about ten minutes of research on Melville Dewey and then please... stop naming library related things after him.

To say that he was an odious person is merely a starting point in a proper description of his character.
