Great thoughts on a very bleak job market. For myself, the professional network has paid dividends time and time again. You could have all the skills/experience in the world but if no one knows it because you're not out there, you're going to get overlooked by default.

Find one of the local places that does office liquidations and buy a Herman Miller or Steelcase for a fraction of the price.
I bought a Steelcase Leap a few years back for $60 that was still in fantastic condition.
