So happy to see this out! We caution against excessive optimism that the opposition will restore countries back to their democratic trajectories after electoral victory. Weakened institutions and the memory of repression makes it tempting to continue rather than buck the trend of autocratization.

Conventional wisdom says that, once in power, opposition parties will return backsliding countries to the democratic path. In reality, not only is this not true, but it is not uncommon for the opposition to adopt the autocratic habits of the regime they replaced.

📢 Who opposes birthright citizenship in the U.S.? Lajevardi & Merolla show broad support overall, but a sizable minority—disproportionately White—favor ending it, with views tied to ideology and attitudes toward undocumented immigrants.

One of the most genuine insights I’ve had into the messy realities of research design, case selection, and fieldwork, and into what it means to truly feel a sense of belonging in the field and academia.
dadakim.bsky.social
Her work reminds us that political control doesn’t stop at the border. And Felicity's important research has already been recognized with major awards, including:
🏆 Princeton Dissertation Scholar Award (Bobst Center)
🏆 UC IGCC Dissertation Fellowship
🏆 UC Dissertation Year Fellowship
dadakim.bsky.social
Felicity’s research shows that diaspora politics is not accidental but deliberately structured. DEPs channel emigrants toward loyalty, silence, or dissent—and repression can both suppress opposition and spark backlash.💥
dadakim.bsky.social
Her data draw on the experiences of emigrants from 🇹🇷Turkey and 🇿🇼Zimbabwe and the diaspora engagement policies their home countries engage in.

Diaspora engagement can be positive (i.e., allowing dual citizenship or voting from abroad) and negative (i.e., monitoring and repression).
dadakim.bsky.social
To study this, she uses a sequential mixed-methods design:
🔘Large-N survey data (CMPS, CAP Turkish diaspora survey)
🔘Over a year of ethnographic fieldwork: 400+ hours of participant observation and 60+ interviews across the UK, Germany, and the US.
dadakim.bsky.social
Felicity adapts Hirschman’s Exit–Voice–Loyalty framework to theorize how emigrants navigate authoritarian outreach:
🔘Exit-Voice: opposition from abroad
🔘Exit-Loyalty: supporting the homeland regime
🔘Exit-Silence: withdrawing from politics due to fear or detachment
dadakim.bsky.social
We often hear about transnational repression—intimidation, surveillance, even forced returns. But Felicity asks us to look beyond activists and exiles to _ordinary emigrants_ and how authoritarian states cultivate loyalty abroad.
