EDITING MUSIC! The past few weeks, I've been deep in the edits—student papers, intvws for a book project. This 22hr collage of every “Drums>Space” the Grateful Dead played in 1990 has been an immensely helpful soundtrack to the process. Not for everyone, but likely to be crucial for some.

Not just musicians and not just creative "block" - "touch grass," "meet new people," "go talk to somebody," etc. are universal balms. Get out into society and outdoors and away from media. Even in the worst times (circa: now), IRL interaction with the world is an ever-ready balm!

If you’re having writers block as a composer, producer, songwriter, etc I highly suggest you go out field recording for the afternoon on a Saturday instead of locking yourself in the shed.

If you'd like to delight in a side-by-side comparison, here's Bari Weiss' reported note to CBS staffers (left) and the one I cooked up on ChatGPT with a quickly dashed-off prompt (right). Looking forward to hearing from you in the days and weeks ahead!

An article in which, unsurprisingly, the Times' own culpability in elevating this person's gaslighting "free speech" campaign, and heedlessly raising her profile, never comes up!

In fairness, as someone who used it throughout the late-80s/early-90s (I worked at the university library and amused myself by reading old copies of UK music magazines), I too have always wondered about that word. The "micro" I get, but why "fiche"?

You work hard as a journalist. You lead with empathy, and you sweat details. You operate in good faith. You believe in honesty and truth. You get yelled at by the president of the United States. You worry that you'll get laid off. Again and again.

And then you see this. www.wsj.com/business/med...
Paramount Buys Bari Weiss’s the Free Press for $150 Million
Weiss, who once said she was done with legacy media, is to take control of CBS News’s editorial vision, aiming for “news that reflects reality.”

Domino catalog indie-electronic overlap...maybe? But as a longtime fan (and published supporter), I'm not sure what a "best known Notwist song" is? Are any considered bigger than others?

I'm chasing it with another listen of the epic, majestic 7hr "Optimogeddon," when Twitch'n'Wilkes ended their legendary Glasgow night, triggering memories of hearing the live webcast (in Venice of all places), Kate and I laughing at its emo-ness. #RIPJDTwitch One of the greatest to ever do it!

Must Read! These past few months, it's been a heartbreak and a pleasure to read Ned commemorating Keith McIvor's life, the love and respect for all of JD Twitch's musicking on full display. Here's the inevitable denouement, as plainspoken and beautiful as I expected. Thanks Ned! [1/2]

I have found what words I can about the 'great pal' -- stirmonster, #JDTwitch, Keith McIvor.

Always thought it was true, but previously felt she was being a little constricted by the tightness of tradition she was willfully giving her art over to. But maaaaaan, 'Oh Snap!' breaks those molds so well. On-Repeat round here - and hoping for remixes...

Must Read! Not only a deeply researched, considered argument on the "poptmisim wars," but a very good overview of where popular music criticism stands at the moment. With links and secondary reads galore. Hopefully the last thing we'll need on the subject.

Once & for all, let's specify what "poptimism" was & wasn't, and why many people can't stop blaming it for every cultural change of the past 20 years. Most recently the esteemed Kelefa Sanneh, who's often (wrongly) said to have started it! Today in @slate.com

A screenshot of the headline of an article by Carl Wilson, reading, "Criticism's Biggest Strawman: What was 'poptimism,' and why are people still saying terrible things about it?" It's illustrated by a picture of a straw-stuffed scarecrow in a field, wearing a Taylor Swift T-shirt.
