Henry Farrell on the Trump admin’s proposed “compact” for universities, arguing that the rollout signals weakness, and that academics need to band together to reject this authoritarian attack on university independence and academic freedom.

The death of the semi-shady local campus copyshop (and the official bookstores complete paranoia about copyright) stymied me on that this semester, but I think I need to try again bc it’s ridiculous to try and run a discussion when everyone trying to read a page of Harper’s weekly on their phones

Hey @queermedieval.bsky.social your illustration prints *beautifully*!!

Anti-fascist frogs hot off the press
A print made from wood type and linoleum. The linocut is an early-modern style woodcut rendition of a protester in a frog costume facing off against two ICE officers in riot gear. The text reads

Putting in more shifts at the archive mines or logging a double at the paragraph factory – that doesn't seem all that meaningful in a context where historical knowledge not just fails to move us forward, individually or in aggregate, but simply makes us aware of how bad things are getting, & worse.

Lorrin Thomas, the author of that review essay – which is itself a valuable exploration of five really innovative new contributions to scholarship – has really put their finger on it.

Americans are repeating their worst history–and doing so both ignorantly & knowledgeably, furiously & joyfully.

"The most obvious goal of historical scholarship, for its authors as well as its readers, is to generate a better understanding of the past—in order, as the saying goes, to avoid repeating it. At the same time, historians must constantly confront the glib aspiration in that aphorism."

“We didn’t take any federal funding at our sites. You can get philanthropic support. You don’t have to take federal money. And if the federal government is involved and tries to take away the essence of these cultural institutions, I would advise them to tell the government, ‘Keep your money.’”

Here is is, from Bryan Stevenson @eji.org.
What's wrong with "heroic history?"
"It’s like saying, 'I’m going to the doctor, but I’ve already instructed my doctor, Don’t give me any bad news' ... if you don’t want to be sick... you have to be willing to hear the truth of your condition."

Inside were her crib notes for attacking the senators.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

I mean, everyone On Here knows this, but Marx being a huge fan of Lincoln (and going from liking Johnson to hating him) blew my mind when I first read about it.

But my favorite is that in 1913 Freud, Hitler, Trotsky, Stalin, and Franz Joseph all lived a couple of miles from each other in Vienna.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.
