Life begins. #SundayPixBeginnings
A lone duckling races to catch up with its siblings and Mama duck on the Rochdale canal. It appears as a small blob in the top right corner and is heading into a wobbly, distorted pattern that's formed by the water reflecting trees, and is slightly reminiscent of abstract expressionist paintings. Two swans and seven cygnets glide across the large pond in Brockwell Park, Brixton. Six of the cygnets are between the two parents, with the seventh one trailing slightly behind. Daybreak along the Rochdale canal, Mytholmroyd. #SundayPixBeginnings
The shot is looking through an old stone bridge that spans the Rochdale canal. The sun is rising on the other side of the bridge, and light is reflected off the water revealing the stones that curve around. There are stone paving slabs to the right, and in the middle are two geese, idly drifting along the canal, silhouetted against the rising sun. I’m alive and intact. I’m not sure how! Conditions on the moors were worse than expected, and I expect atrocious in January!

That hike was a cross between Deliverance and the final scene from Russian film, Come and See.

Before I head to the Land of Nod (and just in time!), some pix for #SundayPixLight
Sunset over Hebden Bridge, Autumn 2024 The sun is just about to dip below the horizon in the middle of two valleys. I was lucky enough to be elevated, so I caught some of the town, too. The clouds are ablaze with glorious colours, and through a large gab reveals pale blue sky. The Sun’s about to peep over the Rochdale canal on a winter’s morning. A house stands high on the opposite side with bare trees silhouetted against a vivid, glowing orange sky. There’s not a cloud in sight. Heptonstall’s church tower is silhouetted against a fiery late afternoon sunset. It looks like a giant Batman depending on the angle. Anyhow, above the church is an ominous large grey cloud, its underside reflecting the fiery colours. A shower of rain can be seen falling down on the church.

Went for a hike and found the trail went through a paddock containing these two sheep.

They came right over to me which was unusual. Stranger still, the one looking at the camera tried eating my jacket. 🤣

Spotted this unusual looking duck by the canal as I walked into Heb the other day. Turns out it's a Muscovy duck, indigenous to Mexico and Central America.

Happy to see it seems to have been accepted by the other ducks and now swims around with them. Apparently it doesn't quack but hisses.
The duck is sleeping with its head twisted round (a la Exorcist), so I was able to get close to it. Its feathers are amazing, in iridescent green and black colours, and it has red fleshy facial skin (caruncles).

The leaf wasn't falling. It was caught on a single strand of spider silk. I have a photo from my Fuji that shows the silk, but this iPhone pic is a better composition. I'm amazed I caught this given how rapidly it was spinning in a relentless wind coming off the moors. I'd clambered to the top of the Dill Scout's Wood, late in the day, out of curiosity. The sun was about to sink over the horizon, and I had a way to go, but this was mesmerising. After a lengthy hike that took in Callis Wood, Edge End Moor, Stoodley Pike, Higher Moor, and Shaw Wood, I spotted a sign pointing to a footpath through another small wood. It seemed to head in the direction I was going, so I took the diversion, and clambered up a narrow, tricky path and found myself in the Jurassic era. The light was breathtaking, so I decided to snap a pic and ended up with a bonus lens flare. Seconds later, the Sun had moved just enough to vanquish the moment to history. I headed out for a walk through Hathershelf Scout Wood one late spring evening. After taking several diversions, I found myself headed up towards Blackwell Common but thought better of ploughing on as it began raining. You'd never guess from this picture, but the rain was horizontal when I spotted this young Roe deer in the middle of a buttercup-filled meadow. Heading up to Wadsworth Moor to get some snaps of the blooming heather, I encountered rush hour traffic on the path ahead! The sheep moved off the path and into the grass, then stopped and all turned to look at me. Well, all bar one. Or should that be all baa one?! Anyhow, this is a crap alt-text, but it shows a group of sheep standing in a green and purple landscape looking towards the camera.

A tangle of marsh grass, ferns, bramble and nettles obscure the path. Only it wasn't a path, it was a swamp. Despite the summer drought, this was so sodden that water went over the top of my boots, the ankle, not the toes! This was at the end of a really well maintained, paved path in Eaves Woods. It's another tangle of bramble, nettles and ferns and, despite being in shorts, I managed to get through this without being stung! These ferns were as tall as I am (almost 6ft) and are part of a clearly marked path in Hollin Hey Wood, Cragg Vale.

I could happily spend all day posting to #SundayPixOffTheBeatenTrack but coursework and housework beckon, as does a workout.

Work, work, work. No wonder I love escaping to quieter trails, like the path I found from my flat up to Wadsworth moor. A brutal climb, but what a view.
