My issues mostly stem from the "enterprise" feeling of systemd. "Simple" things are overly verbose and while the documentation is fantastic for understanding what already exists, it's atrocious for when you just want to create something yourself.

I don't think there's a benefit to using POST over GET, it really just depends on whether it's easier for your glue code to encode url parameters or json. WebSockets would cut down on the message overhead - but it's a more complicated protocol so there might not be any practical benefits.
