When vacancy rates rise, rents fall. It's the most robust finding in housing. If you want housing costs to fall, you have to build.

the opponents of congestion pricing have already moved on to "it's actually a *bad* thing less people drove in", but let's take a moment to remember that a lot of people baselessly claimed it wouldn't reduce driving. They were wrong.

43K fewer drivers on Manhattan roads after congestion pricing turned on, MTA says
The decline amounted to a 7% reduction in traffic in the toll zone south of 60th Street.

I don't think people understand that this isn't a gotcha or a way to trick the system as much as... the correct way congestion pricing advocates want people to respond to incentives.

Less cars in (lower, but eventually all) Manhattan means everyone wins.

@josephpolitano.bsky.social does any of that crude oil generally feed into NY-21? would be a shame if the price of gas increased there in say, the first 90 days after a trump presidency...

of all the absurdity here, I think I get most hung up on "change" being a euphemism for "bad". These people have no ability to asses potential positive impact.

we elect local officials to deal with interpreting the nuance of the law so normies don't have to, and then still give normies authority to speak on specific proposals, context-lessly.

city of yes in my backyard 🫡
When my wife and I look at the cost of buying a home in our neighborhood, it feels impossible.

We need far more than the City of Yes — but it's a step in the right direction. I urge the Council to resist efforts to revise the proposal in any way that would yield fewer homes.

genuine question, could Dems implement RCV in the 2028 primary? Who would need to sign on? Is there a reason there hasn't been a push for it?

"officials from the State of New Jersey have complained that the plan is unfair to people who have no choice but to drive into the tolling zone."

I'm just so curious who exactly has "no choice" but to drive into the tolling zone. Are you coming in for a broadway show? that's a choice.
Breaking News: Transit leaders voted to approve New York City’s congestion pricing program, fueling a growing backlash against Gov. Kathy Hochul from critics.

WHY DOES THIS MAN KEEP USING CZAR POSITIVELY
President-elect Donald Trump picked North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum to serve as both interior secretary and “energy czar,” a role that will orchestrate sweeping plans to repeal climate rules and boost oil and gas production on millions of acres of federal land.

Streets that sometimes open to all pedestrians ("open streets") have a 10% lower chance of being vacant. It's not complicated, pedestrianizing spaces improves growth, not hinders it.
From new @nycplanning.bsky.social report on storefront vacancy:

Vacancies down to 11% across the city, declining four quarters in a row. It’s even lower on open streets and in business improvement districts

i know we shouldn't be surprised, but congestion pricing is the exact kind of let-the-free-market-decide policy that republicans *should* be in support of. All users should pay for the resources they consume. But because of the urban <---> suburban/rurals political split, it gets left-coded.

The whole point of having a council is to avoid the ability of the minority to influence the majority. This idea that any one individual, without needing to give a reason, has the ability to block new housing for hundreds of new yorkers is utterly preposterous.
November 14, 2024 at 7:33 PM
The money from congestion pricing is nice, but the real benefit is less cars in the densest ZIP codes in the country. Lowering the price not only reduces income, but also minimizes the threshold for New Yorkers to make different commuting decisions. "saving new yorkers money", is not the goal.
