i love it when americans comment on the euro because you know who else has a single currency for 400 million people in regions and states with wildly varying economies and drastically unequal levels of wealth and development...

Actual good Russians support sanctions, because they want the end of the war and the regime more than they want foreign holidays and imported products. This is implicit in the term 'good'.

It's very possible that what used to be the traditional, anti-populist right will end up as part of the left wing coalition. This has already happened in other European countries, notably Italy where the Christian Democrats and the Communists ended up merging into one party!

Being able to cause serious harm to the US (and China, and russia …) in case we need to is literally the whole point of having nuclear weapons! Did Sofa King just discover the concept of mutually assured destruction?

Exactly. The USA has Trump, a Congress where the majority in both chambers supports Trump and a Supreme Court hand picked to let Trump do what he wants. This is the worst case scenario, and the written constitution is still managing to hold Trump back some of the time!

Not sure if anyone there seriously expects the King to do anything, but legally he's the only person who could. And almost certainly wouldn't. And people almost certainly wouldn't like it if he did. This is why written constitutions and independent judges to enforce them are a good idea!

Yes, because giving absolute power to someone based on who his ancestors were is obviously wrong. Giving absolute power to the leader of the party that 30% voted for is also pretty obviously wrong (as you pointed out), although the British establishment seems insanely optimistic that it'll all be ok

The UK does have one constitutional safeguard against Farage - the King could simply refuse to name him as PM and refuse royal assent to any bill adopted by a Reform majority in Parliament. Which … also isn't exactly ideal for a 21st century democracy.

On behalf of all French speakers who use the expression "choosing between plague and cholera" and who just learned that the two diseases never actually coexisted in Europe, I choose to take this personally
