Thrilled to share this new article I co-authored with Megan Linton! We explore the ways that Canadian disability housing policy is 'haunted' by systemic ableism. Read it to discover how Canada continues to exclude, eliminate and extract from people with disabilities through supported housing.

Are avenues to innovation available for states dodging outside of federal issue attention? Specifically, does weakened federal administrative capacity (even prior to the shutdown) create opportunity for state-level innovation to protect democratic institutions leading up to 2026 midterms?

Woah the ableist & sanist language got out the fuck of control. It's like everybody's on RFK's eugenicist team the way they view "deviants." For us disabled & mad people it sucks a lot that this harm towards us exploded. Just know you're helping fascism if everything's "insane" & "batshit" to you.

The upshot: what matters is not just the latent power resources states (and cities!) have, it’s how officials adapt their use to defend or enhance autonomy. Newsom’s response here is a great example of how a repertoire of defiance can evolve. 2/2

Gavin Newsom announces that any California university that caves to Trump and signs his “loyalty pledge” will be immediately defunded.

“CALIFORNIA WILL NOT BANKROLL SCHOOLS THAT SELL OUT THEIR STUDENTS.”

Hypnotically potent symbolism in this photo
A security officer speaks sternly into his phone in front of a mural by the artist Banksy on a London courthouse depicting a judge attacking an unarmed protester with a gavel.

Late to this, but still have lots of thoughts so let’s go: one like = one point on the political economy of disability and chronic illness. Consider this my belated ADA anniversary offering :)

Not least because small seminars are a major antidote to AI essays; it’s hard to hide behind superficial AI analysis and summaries of novels when there’s only 10 others in the room and you’re going to have to participate in conversation

Honestly an abomination that the current austerity model of education is fundamentally allergic to the idea of small seminar-style learning, the form that spent several thousand years as the holy grail of educating learners in complex subjects.

Do you love what we do, pals? It's time to take your shot to join our Board of Directors! We're particularly looking for someone who can strengthen our fundraising/grant-making work (so we can keep the lights on and do the stuff we need to do!)

More here: www.djno.ca/post/joi...

DEAN: What's the tariff on bananas?

LUTNICK: Generally 10%

DEAN: Walmart has already increased the cost of bananas by 8%

LUTNICK: If you build in America, there is no tariff

DEAN: We cannot build bananas in America

All the more upsetting when you realize that - unlike the other guy who posts impulsively - this messaging was likely decided upon after extensive consultation.

In all of its actions, Canada’s new government will be guided by a new fiscal discipline:

Spend less so Canadians can invest more.

The de-prioritization of disability accelerated during first Trudeau gov't. Hence, the toothless framework legislation (ACA and CDB) and vague rhetoric (Disability Inclusion Action Plan and Nat'l Autism Strategy). Weak progress, now regress - Carney seems prepared to ignore disability altogether.

No Minister for Disabled Communities from @MarkJCarney, so it's on you, @PattyHajdu! It's time to rebuild the Canada Disability Benefit: Automatic access from other Province programs, major increase to the CDB to be livable, & leadership from our whole communities to get it done.
The image features a red background textured to resemble a fabric wall, illuminated by six spotlights from above. At the top, bold white text reads, "Welcome to the Job, Patty Hajdu..." In the center, large bold yellow and black text states, "Time for the Spotlight." Below this text, an image of Patty Hajdu, a woman with light gray hair wearing a gray plaid suit. At the bottom, against a black stripe, white text reads, "We Need A Disabled Community-Led Canada Disability Benefit."

Black and white photo of a young woman, Carrie Buck, with short brown hair sits outside on a bench next to her mother, Emma Buck, whose light hair is pulled up. Both women wear long light-colored dresses and stare at the camera with furrowed eyebrows and serious expressions. Emma rests her right hand on Carrie's left shoulder. Illustration of a tree labeled Eugenics across the top of its canopy. The trunk bears the phrase Eugenics is the self direction of human evolution. The roots of the tree are labeled with various academic disciplines including biology, psychology, statistics, anthropology, law, medicine, genetics, economics, history, sociology, and religion. A caption at the bottom reads: Like a tree eugenics draws its materials from many sources and organizes them into an harmonious entity.

Central to my research has been that the pervasive ableism behind vaccination refusal and hesitance has roots as far back as the eighteenth century. The deep fear of disability (especially cognitive or intellectual) as a fate somehow worse than contagious disease is absolutely not new.
