Just pondering as I play (and enjoy) Kingdom Come 2, a game that is clearly labeled in the RPG genre but that has less freedom (of story, not activity) than some open world adventure titles.

Today everything has progression and levels. If Metaphor is an RPG, why is Assassins’ Creed not? To be clear I enjoy both of those things (though I was not a fan of the move to the level based approach for AC) and AC has more actual branching choices than Metaphor had.

My personal forever passion is RPGs. The RP is role-playing. If I don’t create a persona, crawl into it, make meaningful decisions and suffer the consequences I’m not in that genre. The JRPGs and ARPGs got those tags because they had progression systems when little else did.

I only was a games journalist for a brief few years (Next Generation, Daily Radar) as I joined the online side right before the .com crash and the forward thinking company I was working for didn’t want to be seen as a dot com so killed our site. But that launched me into game dev. Still, those days
