Day 20 is a HUGE GIFT! My fav distillery, Aberlour, and one of my fav whiskies, the A'Bunadh. The story is great (more later), but the reason it's a fav is that it is aged entirely in Oloroso sherry butts and it is bottled at cask strength. No batch is identical but they all are likely to be great.

Day 19 is another one of my fav bottlers, Douglas Laing’s Old Particular single casks. This one is a Speyside 14yo, I believe finished in Oloroso butts.

Nose: sultanas and leather (a drop of water opens up the nose, a bit of apple skins)

Day 17 is a 12yo Speyside from That Boutique-y Whisky Company. One of my favourite bottlers!!

Nose: super Speyside, toffee and vanilla, sweet and simple

Palate: again simple, very light, spices of various kinds (some baking, pepper)

Finish: short, creamy sweet vanilla

A simple but tasty dram!

Day 11 is a single cask from an independent bottler: Douglas Laing's Old Particular series, 2009 bottling of Mortlach 15yo at 48.4%.

Nose: oak forward, heavy cereal, hint of honey. If you're Australian, it's basically honey weet-bix.

We love Arran and have been many times. Strongly recommend a visit to the Isle and to the distillery (as well as to its sister distillery, Lagg)!

Meanwhile, here's a photo of Arran! Psst @danielrock.bsky.social

Day 9 is a TREAT! It's from one of my favourite distilleries in my favourite Scottish isle (we named our dog Arran). Arran The Bodega is part of their core range, and bottled at cask strength (this one 55.8%) so get your pipettes ready.

Nose: burnt brown sugar, candy cane.
December 10, 2025 at 3:13 AM
Day 8 is a sherry cask staple: Tamdhu 12! All Tamdhu is aged in Oloroso sherry. It's in the heart of Speyside, so it's all a big whisky hug.

Nose: butter popcorn, orange peel

Palate: crisp, sweet, oats/cereal. A hint of toffee. Red fruits, very sherry.
December 9, 2025 at 3:00 AM
Day 6: Glenfarclas 15yo, from one of the last family run distilleries in Scotland and this one in particular is bottled at 46% bc it was a family fav and they liked it at that strength. Ah, family firms (IYKYK).

Nose: strong honey, hard candy, xmas cake (classic sherry), and something fresh (pear?)
December 7, 2025 at 2:31 AM
Day 5 is an Irish whiskey - Redbreast Lustau edition. The first 9-12y were in bourbon and sherry casks, and then they finished it in Oloroso sherry butts from Bodegas Lustau. Distilled in a pot still, bottled at 46%.

Nose: very Irish! Sweet and subtle, the sherry is overpowering everything else.
December 6, 2025 at 2:56 AM
Day 4 is a long hop over to Speyside: The GlenAllachie 15yo, at 46%. Their distillery only started bottling their wares as single malt in 2018, having all gone into blends before that. It's a really nice range, and I like this entry.
December 5, 2025 at 2:47 AM
Day 3 is a new one for us! Coming from an independent bottler, all we know from this &Whisky variant is that it's an Islay spirit (so expect peat unless otherwise stated!) and matured entirely in sherry casks. Exciting!

Nose: light sweet smoke, sea salt dark chocolate

Palate: spicy, xmas cake ...
December 4, 2025 at 3:37 AM
Day 2 is a staple: Laphroaig 10yo sherry oak. This is their core 10 finished in Oloroso sherry casks for about a year or so. Sherry is mighty so makes an impact even in the short time.

Nose: cedar wood, light sweet smoke, cloves, sniff of grass.

Palate: so very much Islay! ...

Day 1 of our sherry cask advent calendar is A STRONG START! We get a 21yo Tobermory at 46.3%.

I'm a HUGE FAN of Tobermory, we've visited twice. The Isle of Mull is gorgeous, there's great whisky, and *puffins*.

Nose: Poached cherry and salty Mull dunnage.

My doggo Arran SENSES 3pm. She decided that's ball time, and every day anyone is home at 3pm she will come and do her ball dance until you to outside and play ball with her.

Highlight of my day was not just having lunch with the amazing Claudia Goldin, but learning she's responsible for my favourite kitchen item: my ice cream scoop.

She has not just been an inspiration for my professional life but has also directly, heavily improved my personal life!

What a star.

Last day of #SOLE in Toronto. I love my home town so much. It's such a wonderful city. Top 5 in the world for me. Food, people, vibe, liveable ❤️ already miss it! (also SOLE was awesome and labour economists are such great folks!)

This cardinal comes by my window every morning now, perches outside and yells out to its partner on a nearby tree. I wonder if he's watching our morning routine like @bakerdphd.bsky.social watches reality shows

Folks, I so married up.

My husband made pork belly tonight and I thought it was the right time to bring this guy out as the pairing. Omg was I right.

DELICIOUS.

Also, this is what I want to do for a living. Pairings. What a life.

Finally! Day 24 is a MASSIVE treat! The Balvenie 30yo!!

Nose: complex, red fruit, oak, toffee, so powerful you can almost taste it if you nose with an open mouth. Leather and library after the first taste.

Day 23 is the Teeling vintage reserve, 30yo from 1991.

Nose: peach, caramel, stone fruit, vanilla. Very Irish.

Palate: dry, quite sharp, a lot sharper than I'd have expected for an Irish whiskey. Honey, a bit zesty. Xmas sweets (marzipan maybe?)

Day 22 is the Longmorn 23yo, Secret Speyside Collection.

Nose: light fruity nose, orange peel

Palate: creamy, brown sugar, pear, ginger

Finish: warm finish, baking spices rounds out the cookie palate.

Not much on the nose, but really lovely dram!
