Lynch's work goes back to the avant-garde filmmakers of the twenties and thirties, who were often painters—and he himself trained to be one. He takes off from the experimental traditions that Hollywood has usually ignored. (1986)

despite its numerous faults, it seems like a lot of people are afraid of fully unplugging from spotify because they'll miss out on music discovery. that's a role that music journalism can and should be filling.

Although it’s a cliché to say that a place can be as much of a character in a movie as a person, it’s a cliché that Joachim Trier has made his own. Margaret Talbot writes about how the director put the Norwegian capital of Oslo on the cinematic map.
Joachim Trier Has Put Oslo on the Cinematic Map
His new film, “Sentimental Value,” is another intimate character study set in the Norwegian capital. His approach to directing is as empathic as his films.

Sam Shepard’s works never stopped calling to a certain type of actor—the mostly straight, mostly white theatre guys. Lately, though, there has been a flourishing of Shepard adaptations—queer ones, avant-garde ones, political ones—written by women. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/3swM8D

Valley Voice Debut Recording
Toronto saxophonist and composer Harrison Argatoff has launched a new quartet, Valley Voice, whose debut album Stars, Engines arrives October 10 on Elastic Recordings. The group - featuring vibraphonist Michael Davidson, bassist Dan Fortin, and drummer Ian Wright - embodies more than just a meeting of accomplished Canadian jazz musicians. At its heart, Valley Voice nods to Argatoff’s Doukhobor heritage, a tradition that valued pacifism, communal music-making, and a reverence for life and nature.

Toronto saxophonist Harrison Argatoff spent five years unlearning his technique, studying contemporary dance, and writing music for his chamber quartet Valley Voice—all of which led to 'Stars, Engines', his debut album as band leader.

As of this morning, we’ve published 2,250 reviews covering albums, EPs, box sets, live performances, and the occasional odd release that doesn’t fit anywhere else. That’s fifteen years of listening, writing, editing, and discovering new sounds in experimental, avant-garde, electronic, improvisational, modern classical, ambient, heavy, and other boundary-pushing forms of music. We are proud of the work and grateful to everyone who’s read, shared, or disagreed with us along the way. Every comment, email, and late-night recommendation has helped shape what this site has become. You can read all our reviews in reverse chronological order here.
