They mentioned the offensiveness after several detailed paragraphs in which they talked about how the student completely failed to do what the assignment was asking of them.

On my part - I didn’t mean to come off aggressive but after re-reading my comment I apologize for the strong tone.

110%.

Based on my read of it, and the position titles of everyone involved are definitely unclear, it sounds like the person being victimized is a grad TA on a course with another individual serving as instructor of record.

Fwiw I wouldn’t even call it a sermon because she doesn’t really cite or engage with scripture, it is just a bigoted screed.
December 1, 2025 at 5:39 PM
Not to mention probably violating FERPA protections the grad TA should have
December 1, 2025 at 5:37 PM
It is anything other than exemplary work from a grad TA is missing the forest for the trees. This becoming the big deal it has is entirely a result of administrators with less courage and dedication to the profession of higher education than the TA and instructor involved here.
December 1, 2025 at 5:35 PM
They provided a detailed explanation of how the student clearly failed to engage with the reading or with the basic premise of the assignment while tactfully trying to discourage the student from creating a hostile classroom environment, idk man I think anyone who looks at that feedback and thinks..
December 1, 2025 at 5:35 PM
Hey now, not all poli sci people. This is terminal ConLaw brain we are dealing with.
December 1, 2025 at 5:28 PM
The instructors handled it fine. The onus is on the university administration not backing up the faculty, and CERTAINLY not caring about protecting the grad TA
December 1, 2025 at 5:25 PM
Then why did you make a post to your personal social media platform in which you legitimize, and contribute to, the bus-throwing?
December 1, 2025 at 5:21 PM
Nah it deserved a zero.

And calling the person grading the paper “demonic” in the paper is, in fact, quite offensive.
December 1, 2025 at 5:19 PM
Yeah we are dealing with that at my institution. Really loving the cis white men who think they got tenure at a well-ranked R1 entirely because of them being special boys and not because their spouse gave up their career to raise children / they weren’t facing structural racism / etc.

Also admins that are trying to figure out how to further defund actual professors and shift more power and resources to admin.

Someone once made a joke that has stuck to me for years: “To the higher ed administrator, the ideal university has no faculty and no students”
December 1, 2025 at 4:50 PM
Absolutely! I agree with all of this. I just think saying “it’s all Reagan’s fault!” Is often used as a cop-out.
December 1, 2025 at 4:44 PM
Saying “Surely moderate republicans will reject *this* step on the continued drift into theocracy, white nationalism, and corruption” is old enough to drink
December 1, 2025 at 4:38 PM
I think it is a grave strategic blunder to think sitting back and counting on fascists to snap out of it is a viable strategy.
December 1, 2025 at 4:36 PM
I’m not sure the same constituency exists in other red states… Oklahoma has been nuking their education system from top to bottom for years now and R’s keep cruising to reelection.
December 1, 2025 at 4:35 PM
110% agree with you here - strongly worded faculty senate resolutions aren’t going to cut it.
December 1, 2025 at 4:27 PM
I feel you on the trauma. Idk I just think academia has to understand how it has failed itself if it is ever going to save itself.

Already posted a replies on this, thread linked here, but I think blaming Reagan is, at best, a not-particularly-productive activity.
Yes and no, that is pretty reductive and frankly takes a lot of agency and responsibility away from academia as an institution and academics as individuals.

This is the median Republican attitude right now.
