Since 2016, the Coral Trait Database (www.coraltraits.org) has contributed to the advancement of coral reef science globally. However, data on #octocorals —key components of many coral ecosystems— was missing... until NOW. 🎉 The Octocoral Trait Database is here! 👇

🧵Can marine restoration lead to ecological recovery?

🌊Success is often assessed by short-term survival of transplants, but what about long-term changes in community (trait) composition?

We studied this for a key Mediterranean octocoral. 👇

Summertime marine heatwaves (MHWs) in 2023/2024 were unprecedented and had wide-ranging biological, physical and societal impacts. Need to develop better response plans and adaptation/intervention approaches as MHWs intensify under climate change. New ms in Nat CC: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Ocean extremes as a stress test for marine ecosystems and society - Nature Climate Change
In 2023–2024, widespread marine heatwaves associated with record ocean temperatures impacted ocean processes, marine species, ecosystems and coastal communities, with economic consequences. Despite wa...

The studied assemblages were mostly dominated by #gorgonians and #blackcorals. They were structurally complex, functionally diverse and well-preserved, harboring some of the #densest black coral populations reported to date.

to study the functional vulnerability of global coral fauna. Looking forward to this new chapter!
