These glasses. It’s wild how the body heals itself layer by layer. After a retinal rupture, I’m now preparing for cataract surgery. Vision is slowly finding its way back. The retina is so fragile: where sight begins, maybe even the soul. The body’s quiet repair feels nothing short of miraculous.

Excellent ruling from Judge Young.
This is a #NoKings ruling ❌👑.

So, what happens next?

Summary: it can be appealed by Trump DOJ to the 1st Circuit, and to the Supreme Court.

And some chance, but decently unlikely, that the (corrupt) SCOTUS would then overturn this and kill the grants again. 1/
MORE YOUNG: "It is palpably clear that these directives and the set of terminated grants here also are designed to frustrate, to stop, research that may bear on the health – we’re talking about health here, the health of Americans, of our LGBTQ community. That’s appalling."

I’m so proud of our students in the SF Bridge Program at UCSF and SFSU. You’ve had to navigate the rigorous demands of academia & the emotional weight of watching institutions meant to support you falter. And still—you showed up with care, brilliance, and strength. I’m honored to witness your paths.

“This is not to condemn those who remain. There is value in continued presence, in bearing witness, in working for reform from within. But there comes a point when presence itself becomes an endorsement, when working within the system becomes indistinguishable from working for it.”
"For me, the answer now lies in refusal, the withdrawal of participation from systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging."

Today I am resigning from the National Science Board and the Library of Congress Scholars Council.

I wrote about my decision in TIME.

A fun thing about that Trump report is the admin is also telling the Supreme Court to only apply rational basis review to bans on this health care, meaning states wouldn't have to actually prove their claims in court (a thing states with bans have never actually done under heightened scrutiny)
WashPo [10 May 25] -- Shocking endorsement by WashPo Editorial Board of 400-page anti-trans HHS attack on pediatric care: "careful and thorough... makes a legitimate case...clear and careful language... greater emphasis on psychotherapy in treating gender dysphoric youth." @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

The editorial completely omits the fact that the Trump has nuked nearly $400 million in LGBTQ related research and has explicitly banned any and all funding for transgender health. But they ignore all that while they call for "better research" that is now banned and defunded.

An important point getting overlooked:

When NIH cancels "diversity" grants (e.g., diversity supplements, Fs, Ks, etc), they aren't canceling the grants based on *what* the grant studies.

They're cancelling them based on *who* is doing the research. And that disallowed "who" is anyone not white.

I am hearing from several sources that "NIH" sent out termination notices for most or all "diversity" awards yesterday to coincide with the new Notice.

If you were affected by this and are willing to share, please DM me or reach me on Signal (jeremymberg.78)

I barely have words.

Expected at this point but so so disappointing and unfair. We are effectively punishing some of America's best science students for telling the government they are from an underrepresented community.

🧪 Tip: You have the right to contest a grant termination, even though NSF says you don't. 🧵

On Friday, NSF terminated 402 grants (per Musk's DOGE).

The notification letters had one of the most egregious violations of fed regulations I've seen so far in these cases:

"not subject to appeal"
Here's a copy of an NSF grant termination notice that went out today. "NSF is issuing this termination to protect the interests of the government pursuant...on the basis that they no longer effectuate the program goals or agency priorities." Not subject to appeal. #HigherEd #AcademicSky
