Trump dministration planning for a military deployment to Chicago extends back at least to the summer, as the Washington Post scooped in August:

Statement from Gov. Pritzker anticipating federalization of 300 members of the Illinois National Guard by the Trump administration.

Similar efforts in other states have led to lawsuits:

This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will. It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will.

This story shows Trump administration officials:

- Continuing to use Signal casually for sensitive discussions

- Discussing sending the 82nd Airborne to Portland

- Suggesting that Hegseth was reluctant to do so without Trump top cover

The messages show high-level officials in the Trump administration discussing the possible deployment of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, an infantry force that has dropped into combat zones in both World Wars, Vietnam and Afghanistan.
Trump officials discussed sending elite Army division to Portland, text messages show
A high-ranking White House official was indiscreetly texting about the Portland, Ore., planning last weekend, according to messages shared with the Minnesota Star Tribune.

This move, cast here as a response to some sort of uprising, actually includes about 200 Oregon National Guard members, according to a memo that Pete Hegseth sent state officials.

Guard likely will be limited to protecting federal personnel, property. Legality of even that will be contested.

NEW WAPO SCOOP: The Pentagon is making plans to impose strict nondisclosure agreements and random polygraph testing for scores of people, including many top officials, according to two people familiar with the proposal and documents obtained by The Washington Post.

Reached out to retired Gens. Chiarelli, Milley and McKenzie in regard to Hegseth citing them as the kind of leaders he wants "out" of the Pentagon.

Chiarelli responds he is "honored to be put in the same sentence" as the other two.

"Two of the finest leaders I have ever served with," he says.

Mixed reaction from vets and active-duty that I've talked with today about the addresses from Trump and Hegseth at Quantico.

Some see an overdue tone shift.

Others furious or exasperated. One officer sent me this gif from "Billy Madison" in response:
a man in a suit and tie says " what you just said "

Military officials say that Marine Corps Base Quantico will be closed to nonessential personnel tomorrow between 4 a.m. and 12 noon, as President Trump and Defense Secretary Hegseth make addresses to an extraordinary gathering of hundreds of generals.

Yes, ruled unlawful by a federal judge in district court. Now appealed by the Trump administration at a higher level.

The L.A. deployment maxed out at 4,000 California National Guard members and 700 active-duty Marines, all over the objections of local leaders.

This is smaller, but is likely to run into similar legal challenges.

In new memo, Pete Hegseth says 200 members of the Oregon National Guard will be "called into Federal service effective immediately for a period of 60 days."

Follows Trump's call for a military response in Portland.

Has similar feel to deployment to L.A. that began in June.

And so concludes another week with no routine news briefing at the Pentagon.

Previous ones:

March 17 (Sean Parnell, Lt. Gen. Grynkewich)

June 22 (Pete Hegseth, Gen. Caine)

June 26 (Hegseth, Caine)

July 2 (Parnell)

Aug. 7 (Kingsley Wilson)

Aug. 14 (Wilson)

The recent firings of top military officers and the unusual nature of the order has stirred widespread concern among military officials that Hegseth may also have additional surprises in store.
