Oxford (ex Sydney), books, transport, education, science, mathematics. Probably mostly posting about Oxford transport, with the odd book review and some pathological polymathy. For just the book reviews: https://bsky.app/profile/dannyreviews.bsky.social

Europe's Tragedy: A New History of the Thirty Years War dannyreviews.com/h/Europes_Tr... (my review) - "a long and involved, but rewarding, account of one of the most traumatic periods in European history"
light cream book cover: "PETER H. WILSON" in black at the top with "Europe's TRAGEDY" in red below, then a black and white drawing of a tree with a score of people hung on it and soldiers with pikes standing around underneath, then "A NEW HISTORY OF THE THIRTY YEARS WAR" in black at the bottom.

That’s all planned for rebuilding (Oxpens, the triangle between Hythe Bridge and Park End Sts, etc)

I began campaigning for this when my daughter started Reception. She’s now in Year 8… A big thanks to ex-councillor @damohaywood.bsky.social for getting this happening.

Work removing one (1) parking space in East Oxford to facilitate pedestrian and cycle access to a nearby school is due to start tomorrow. Two (2) resident consultations took place ahead of the works to accommodate resident feedback. We wrote about this in July 👉 oxfordclarion.uk/why-wasnt-i-...

Kind of makes sense to have all those shops co-located, though. And unless we get rid of the tourists, someone is going to want to sell them stuff.

Would be great if all these people were able to cycle around Oxford all the time, not just on specially organised rides.

Jeremy Mogford, a millionaire businessman who lives outside Oxford City, objecting to "traffic decisions taken by people who live outside Oxford" and calling on *checks notes* American and Soviet billionaires (Blavatnik, Schwartzman, Ellison) to come in and implement his policy instead.

Wild.

How about an option that doesn't involve driving?

I’m told it’s to mark the route into the Nuffield. The tactiles mark shared space (cycling allowed on the footway) to connect that route to the crossing.

1/ South Korean workers arrested in Georgia and subsequently deported from the US have been giving more accounts of their experiences. The deportation of over 300 workers has caused political uproar in South Korea and prompted a human rights investigation into their ordeal. ⬇️

It’s not a new hospital though - it’s new research buildings for Oxford Uni that are generating the extra parking.

Today might be my last day of the year wearing shorts.

Been lobbying for this since my daughter started primary school - it was on the school-run, so I walked through it four times a day! - but she's now in Year 8...

It's probably easier to do this in Oxford, but when drivers try that here I find I have an urgent need to check my phone while standing in the middle of their route.

The core goal of the scheme is to improve the bus system!

Brookes: "The University supports the initiative's goals to reduce traffic, improve bus services, enhance walking and cycling safety, reduce air pollution, and promote community health and wellbeing. However, the University has raised several operational and student-related considerations..."

"The Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust has expressed its support for the
proposed Oxford temporary congestion charge for cars, recognizing its potential
benefits in reducing air pollution, traffic, and improving bus journey times. However,
the Trust has raised concerns"

In February Susan Brown put out a statement saying "something must be done, everything must be on the table" to fix the bus problems. The county has done something, now the city council opposes that put has no alternative proposal. This is just massively inconsistent.
