Solid. At least the it's been a good week for films.

A bit niche, as you'd have to have seen CARRY ON CAMPING and SPEAK NO EVIL and listened to the most recent episode of @mikemuncer.bsky.social and Susan Calman's Carry Up The Podcast to get it, but I spent too much of my Saturday making it not to share it, so enjoy.

I watched for the first time over Christmas and was surprised at how good it was. I absolutely loved this shot from late in proceedings:

Holy shit.

1. WEAPONS

Containing the best scare of the year (and probably the top 3 tbh) and built around a compelling central mystery featuring the nastiest villain in ages. Cregger wields wild tonal shifts like, well, a weapon, keeping you constantly off guard. Possibly a masterpiece.

2. ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER

PTA's state of the nation address, taking aim at ICE and the militarisation of the police, while keeping it grounded in amazing characters. It absolutely zips along as a piece of filmmaking too, culminating in the best car chase in decades.

3. BRING HER BACK

The bleakest film of the year, with the most horrifying scene of the year too. Brilliantly acted, tightly written and directed with panache, as the incidental details mount up and the sense of dread increases. The Philippou Brothers are two for two.

4. GOOD BOY

Look at him though 😍

Tells a fairly typical modern horror story, but does a great job of doing so from the viewpoint of a non-human protagonist. Scary and genuinely heartbreaking. And again; look at him!

5. HEAD LIKE A HOLE

Ingenious microbudget horror that is a satire of work culture, while taking a genuinely unexpected turn in the finale. Dark and hilarious.

6. SINNERS

A better drama than it is a horror film, but still powerful and pretty much unlike anything else. It portrays the power of music better than any other film I can think of, especially with *that* scene.

7. IT ENDS

Uses a nightmarish, surreal and nihilistic situation to probe questions of how we want to live our lives and how we choose to face the end. An incredible debut from a disgustingly young director, who is well served by his small cast.
December 31, 2025 at 1:27 PM
8. THE UGLY STEPSISTER

A brutal, body horror and gore drenched retelling of Cinderella from the POV of the title character. Has a lot to say about female beauty standards, but turned even my stomach at times. Anchored by an incredible performance from Lea Myren.
December 31, 2025 at 1:27 PM
9. BUGONIA

Feels a bit minor after Lanthimos's recent string of bangers, but still a darkly hilarious satire of conspiracy theories and corporate accountability. Disturbing, but hilarious, so peak Yorgos vibes.

Favourite films of the year (based on UK release dates or festival showings).

10. THE LONG WALK

The best of this year's three Stephen King adaptations. A grim dystopian tale which becomes genuinely nightmarish, but also genuinely moving, bolstered by amazing performances.
