Bluesky: what’s the greatest example of someone naming something (animal, landmark, whatever) after a famous person not just because the person is famous but also because the thing is clearly somehow representative of the person?

How can a woman safely indulge her kink when the thing that turns her on is fear?

And, a man is convinced that his bidet use makes him pee more. Our patient and kind medical expert, Doc Barak, is back to sigh heavily and pretend to take the question seriously.

Recommended reading: Rudolph Herzog's book about humor — what jokes were allowed, what jokes weren't, what jokes could get you imprisoned, what jokes could get you shot — during the Third Reich. It's sobering reading right now, as Trump attacks comedians, late night talk show hosts, and actors.

Making a note of it. I wish Václav Havel was still alive to see this shit and speak out about it.

Speaking of voices under attack…can we be just as loud about Black journalists and comedians who are silenced, even by our so-called liberal outlets.

Oh... shit. Thought I'd toss up a link if someone wanted to buy it. But it looks like the book is out of print and the hardcover goes for $60 and the paperback for $260?!? Maybe your library has a copy? I'm obviously not gonna lend my copy to anyone.

I was reading Dead Funny as people were pushing back against Disney firing Jimmy Kimmel on the orders of the Trump administration. Don't let anyone tell you that pushback didn't matter. It did. And it does. And we're going to need more of it because they're not stopping.

It was almost a test — if the Nazis could get away with imprisoning and murdering beloved comedians and actors and singers and film directors, what couldn't they do?
dansavage.bsky.social
Some of the first people sent to Dachau were comedians who performed in Berlin's cabarets, many of them queer. It quickly progressed to convincing the heads of film studios and theater producers and the managers of opera houses that hiring this actor or that director or this singer was too risky.
dansavage.bsky.social
It seems inconceivable — I'm sure it would've been inconceivable to the German public in the 1920s — that the most famous and beloved actors, comedians, directors, and cabaret artists in Germany would one day be arrested and murdered for telling jokes or making films their rulers didn't like.
dansavage.bsky.social
Some of the most famous and beloved performers of the 1920s and early 1930s — the Rosie O'Donnells, Tom Hanks, Stephen Colberts, and Jimmy Kimmels of their time — had their careers ended and many wound up in concentration camps, where they were killed.
dansavage.bsky.social
When the Nazis came to power in 1933, they closed Berlin's cabarets and imprisoned the comedians who performed in them — basically, they ended the careers of the late-night talk show hosts of their time. Famous actors, screenwriters, and film directors — most of them Jews — were targeted.
