I think their happiness is performative. It's a sales pitch to those they wish to convert. The Joined cannot experience the conditions that make happiness possible.

What if every interaction The Joined have with Carol is a trolley problem? Give her what she wants, no matter how dangerous; or refuse, and potentially kill far, far more?

A singular nuclear weapon, detonated near a population center, would kill hundreds of thousands. Carol's initial tantrum that sent the world into a collective seizure killed eleven million.

I've been thinking about why The Joined gave Carol the atom bomb she requested. Their ethical framework prohibits harming a living thing (even plants). Does that extend to inaction, when it could forseeably cause harm to others?
