El telescopio Spitzer, del que ya he hablado aquí, también llevaba helio para poder observar de 3.6 a 160 µm, pero a cambio la duración estimada de su misión era de apenas 2.5-5 años (2003-2008). El helio se le terminó finalmente en 2009 tras 5 años 8 meses y 19 días, y desde entonces empezó lo que se vino a llamar su "misión templada", con los instrumentos a 28.7 K y observando únicamente a 3.6 y 4.5 µm. En este modo siguió trabajando muchos años, hasta su apagado en 2020 porque dada su órbita heliocéntrica se iba alejando de la Tierra cada vez más, y las comunicaciones eran cada vez más difíciles. Además de la gran distancia, desde 2016 su posición para orientar la antena hacia nosotros requería un ángulo que dejaba los paneles solares sin apuntar al Sol, funcionando sólo con baterías. Y de haberse lanzado JWST en 2018, Spitzer se habría apagado antes para que los recursos necesarios para operarlo pasasen al nuevo observatorio con mejores capacidades. Antes de Spitzer estuvo también ISO (Infrared Space Observatory), un precursor con un espejo de sólo 60 cm, que observaba de 2.4 a 240 µm, y que duró únicamente 28 meses 22 días hasta que se terminó el helio. Y también merecería una mención especial el observatorio WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer), que se refrigeraba con hidrógeno sólido para hacer un cartografiado de todo el cielo entre 3.6 y 22 µm con un espejo de 40 cm durante diez meses de 2010, pero tras acabarse el hidrógeno se rebautizó como NEOWISE para ponerlo a trabajar estudiando asteroides a sólo 3.6 y 4.6 µm y continúa haciéndolo en la actualidad.

Pues parece que Héctor Socas, que nos echó a @viajandoconciencia.bsky.social y a mí del podcast Coffee Break por criticarles el promover tanto la IA generativa, justifica seguir dando dinero a OpenAI a pesar de los lazos estrechos entre sus ejecutivos y Donald Trump porque ese dato es irrelevante 🙃

Sería demagógico y absurdo hacerlo, tanto una cosa como la otra porque en toda gran organización hay gente de todo tipo. No hay que confundir al ejecutivo con el propietario ni con el producto. Los propietarios son los accionistas"
