Update: the email address was only changed 7 days before the outage, ABC reports.

Telcos had been advised that the old inbox would be "temporarily monitored".

It’s all getting very messy.

Apparently Optus’ email was sent to an address that had been used for various types of notifications and had become too crowded.

So a few months ago they set up a new address just for serious telco outages…

‘The emails from Optus to the outdated departmental inbox were CC'd to an email from the office of Communications Minister Anika Wells.

… The names have been redacted, but the email has "mo" in the handle, which has been confirmed as standing for "minister's office".’

Deputy secretary of the Department of Communications, James Chisholm, told Senate estimates Optus sent information about the outages in two emails – which were sent to an incorrect email address.

It delayed the federal government’s awareness of the outages on the emergency call network, he said.
