An actual quote from the Secretary of State for Business and Trade

Too often people go to university to ‘explore research and knowledge’

Look forward to Wes S saying 'too often people go to hospital to have operations' or Heidi Alexander saying 'too often people go to the station to catch a train'

Marina Kemp: 'I thought The Old Fire was extraordinary. Shua Dusapin combines acuity and depth, with straight-shooting sentences that belie their profound emotional complexity. This is a subtle, propulsive, immensely powerful novel.' Thank you, Marina!! The Old Fire is out in January

Anuradha Roy's CALLED BY THE HILLS: A HOME IN THE HIMALAYA is out in January. Sophy Roberts is also a fan, writing: 'Elegant, witty, literary and humane. This is a portrait of a place that will touch your soul.’

‘Entrancing, consoling, humorous and wise, CALLED BY THE HILLS made me melancholy for a place I have never visited, homesick for a house and garden I've never known and fondly attached to people I've never encountered. I felt as if I held the Himalayas in my hands while I read it.’ Chloe Dalton

After loving 3 of her novellas, I started this 408 pg #NataliaGinzburg novel All Our Yesterdays, spanning the war years in northern Italy.

Utterly captivating, it follows 2 families that live opposite each other. I never wanted it to end.

A brilliant original work of observation and community.
Book cover of All Our Yesterdays (Tutti I Nostri Ieri orogonally published in 1952) by Natalia Ginzburg, Italy translated by Angus Davidson, published in UK by Daunt Books (2022) with an introduction by author Sally Rooney. The cover features a black and white photo Jinx and Justin at Cafe, Florence, Italy 1951 and a quote from the New York Times that reads "Ginzburg's books snare so much of what is odd and lovely and fleeting in the world."

From the archive for Mavis Gallant, #BornOnThisDay in 1922, my thoughts on GREEN WATER, GREEN SKY.

I loved this shimmering novel of a young woman's unravelling, set against the backdrop of Venice, Paris & Cannes. It's full of light & shade. #BookSky 💙📚

There’s a scene near the beginning of Mavis Gallant’s 1959 novella Green Water, Green Sky which seems to encapsulate this stunning book. We are in Venice in the height of summer. Seven-year-old Geo…
