Somewhat adjacent to this stylistically is Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton which might tick some of these boxes and I can’t recommend highly enough

If it makes you feel better (not sure why it would), I thought it was excellent, and have reflected on it very frequently since reading as it’s been proven very prescient!

It’s why I’ve found it so frustrating to see otherwise YIMBY people posting this any time there’s a suggestion the government might do this. Like, yeah, you’re gonna need to and it’s not in and of itself bad if you also are trying to increase supply

Unfortunately for you, I’ve been causing the heater by not being around to bet for your massively winning weekends. Now that I’m on it with more regularity I’m sure it’ll crash back down to earth

I was thinking of you today as I trembled with rage that they wouldn’t take diluvian

I’ve actually never seen a tweet about left-antisemitism that doesn’t have an antisemitic reply. I’m sure they exist in theory but it’s fucking exhausting

It’s worth reading! The opening 40% is some real 10/10 stuff, it does sort of aimlessly peter out in final third but it’s a v enjoyable read overall

Great piece!

Yes, and gladly so!

Hi James, I enjoyed today’s Substack. It’s nice to know you have a specific type of subscriber though 😂

Fucking hell I don’t know when I last saw a thread I agreed with more
July 23, 2025 at 10:33 PM
I really liked this article at the time and loved it rereading. Could not possibly agree more! I’ve always been helped when in need and I’ve had loads of great chats with strangers in the pub. Don’t come to my city, not observe the local customs, get in my space and call me rude for being annoyed!

Out of interest, what makes you worried? It doesn’t appear to mention it in the article, is there other reporting I’ve missed?
May 19, 2025 at 4:20 PM
I have been desperately keen to read whatever book I hope you will write for years
May 14, 2025 at 7:39 PM
This was absolutely fascinating, thanks
May 12, 2025 at 7:19 PM
Surprising how good that is! Do you think he’d be a good fit at spurs?

It appears that starting an all out trade war with the country that controls the propaganda network a third of the country (not to mention primarily low info voters) uses was, in fact, a bad idea

Disneyland Paris is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Europe and it’s a few hundred miles away and rains marginally more than Bedfordshire and has more or less the same climate. It will be fine
April 9, 2025 at 9:46 AM
It’s also unbearably hot for 4 months of the year, 100% humidity from may to September, with massive thunderstorms every day and the rides regularly closed for hours at a time. I think they’ll be able to manage a place where it rains gently less than half the year and is generally mild
April 9, 2025 at 9:46 AM
The average annual rainfall in Orlando is 1351mm and it’s 609mm in Bedfordshire, the climate is generally mild and I think it would be fine

I’m a bit joking, and have gone from staunchly Ange in to a lot less so after that. But can see - he stays, the young players get better, we strengthen in 2-3 positions, have less awful injury luck, and those narrow losses become narrow wins or draws and we’re comfortably a good side next season
April 3, 2025 at 9:34 PM
Me too, but if it makes you feel better, I just ran the numbers on the all important stat of number of games lost by more than a goal and we’re on track for our joint best ever PL season by that metric
