This is the second time we've found something that's trying to fail structurally in this house. The first was a big steel I-beam that held up the porch/front door area. It had completely rusted through. That one involved a structural engineer consult. Joy joy.

Apparently joists aren't supposed to look like this.

(It's a double joist made of two 2x8's, of which the one in front has rotted nearly all the way through)

Sigh

Get in, we're posting boardwalks

I would just like to say to whomever poured three inches of concrete for the 2nd floor bathrooms in my house in 1956: we are not friends. I mean, you're almost certainly dead by now so that's axiomatic, but really, this is awful and it made the house start to sink and crack. Bogus idea.

I'd prefer to live in a tech world not well described by, or associated with, someone like Adams. I might grieve his turning into an asshole, but not his passing.

unnngggggh. thank you, pittsburgh water and sewer authority, for providing one hell of an ice skating rink for me to injure myself falling on.

(yes, i've reported this to them already.)

owwww.

It looks a lot like a usaf b-40b/c, which is a reconfigured b737-700: www.planespotters.net/airframe/boe...

This is a very nice snippet of the document when it comes to LLM-written text. (The thread here is good.) I agree emphatically (while having a lot of fun using LLMs to help code).

I love owning a 3d printer part 41. We're redoing the upstairs bathrooms because cast iron plumbing doesn't last as long as this house is old, so we've squished the four of us into one bathroom. Printed this little wall mount for two electric toothbrushes and now there's less sink chaos.

Moon over the great salt lake is gorgeous right now for those in salt lake

My travel indulgence this time. 🤓 The grinder is kind of heavy but it seemed worth it for a week. Love the portability of an aeropress.

My department gave out these supersized mugs a while ago that hold about 2 US cups of liquid and they're a perfect match for a 1h20m lecture.

(I don't know why opening the Qatar campus inspired huge mugs but I'm not complaining.)

Admitting I'm 50 turns out to have advantages. We're skiing at Snowbird. The snow is .. scarce and icy. I declined & spent the morning in the room doing yoga & some PT and making myself an endless series of 1/4 caf aeropress shots. Going out this afternoon for the slush.

And it was lovely. 🤓

Playing with some vegetarian Wellington ideas. I like Kenji's but it's a big pile of work. This one uses a lazy arrangement of puff pastry filled with beyond steak + seitan, braised leeks and carrots, topped with mushroom duxelles.

Not quite the Wellington look but tasted good.

Channeling my mom's xmas morning breakfast tradition with Eggs Florentine. (She did Benedict, but, ham)

I wanted to do something different this year and my friends suggested fondue. I loved the idea, so here we go!

Since that post got blocked, a screenshot for context.

The guy below is quoting someone saying "military history is more important than any other history" and it's sad that neither of them can be bothered to look deeply into the other parts because all of them are cool when you go deep.

And even relative laggard PJM (hi guys) is following the trend - 2025 was a good leap for us. Our total is still low compared to most other parts of the country but our trend looks really good.

Interesting! We got our first #pittsburgh parking ticket by mail today (no physical ticket on the car). Makes sense, though it lengthens the feedback loop between violation-response, but I bet it's faster & safer for the meter readers.

Now if only they could just deduct the ticket automatically...

Is this what Pittsburghers term a bit slippy?

Only saw two stuck city buses getting the kids home from school, so I guess it could be worse. 🤓

Reading the orange site is often a bad idea but this exchange made me guffaw and I'm glad the snarky quip hasn't been sent to oblivion.
