It was Tony Blair who reduced the number down to the present count (he knew getting rid of all in one go wouldn't get through).

There are some genuine good arguments (some perhaps only in theory) for the house of lords, which should be managed by reform.

Universities ar great at R&D.
Putting a product to market, better coming from a company public (government backed) or private.
