Arne Slot on the prospect of adding a centre-half in January: "There are so many games to play before then and, with the position we are in, it's the last thing on my mind."

After a severely disrupted pre-season, Alexander Isak is currently offering Liverpool less than Darwin Nunez did in his final year at Anfield. But the Swede is too good for this to last, and he could be key to Arne Slot turning things around this season.

It's time for Isak to fire Liverpool back into form
The Swede has made a disappointing start to life at Anfield, but has the potential to turn the Reds' season around.

In theory, facing the team mired in 19th should be a gentle reintroduction to the Premier League for Liverpool, but Nottingham Forest do a lot of things they don’t like. So, here’s a look at how Arne Slot might combat that.

Liverpool clearly haven’t seen the best of Florian Wirtz yet, but what do the underlying numbers say about how he is faring in terms of shooting, creating, and defending? A deep dive into his start at Anfield including some reasons to be encouraged.

Liverpool are losing duels and losing matches, but are the two things linked? A look at interesting quirks against Brentford and Real Madrid, Arne Slot's views on duels, and how the approach to the summer window factors into it all.

Liverpool are losing duels and losing matches - is there a link?
Arne Slot regularly discusses the importance of winning duels, but his team are struggling to consistently do so.

If Liverpool are looking for positives, maybe one is that Man City and Arsenal are in a title race this season after being miles off it last time. But they have plenty to fix after a big-spending summer that - in the short term - has made them worse.

Saw a lot of talk about Liverpool getting themselves into the title race by winning today but the fact is this team just isn't close to good enough. Issues with build-up, physical duels, and pressing all on show today, and now an eight-point gap to the summit. Title defence over.

You could argue Liverpool were unlucky with the way Haaland's goal went in, their disallowed goal, and a deflection. But anyone who watched that half knows they were dominated. You have to play so much better than this to have half a chance of winning at Manchester City.

Liverpool to face Manchester City: Mamardashvili, Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Salah, Ekitike, Wirtz.

Subs: Woodman, Gomez, Endo, Kerkez, Isak, Chiesa, Jones, Gakpo, Ngumoha.

Alisson Becker set to return following the international break. Jeremie Frimpong will take a little longer and won't be back to face Nottingham Forest.

Alexander Isak is set to return to training today, Arne Slot reveals.

Allowed to operate in the spaces where he announced himself as a world-class talent, Florian Wirtz created more chances and covered more ground than any other player against Real Madrid. Using him off the left is a solution to a lot of Liverpool's issues.

Slot has found perfect solution to Liverpool's Wirtz problem
Florian Wirtz's left-wing role against Real Madrid looks like the answer to a number of problems Arne Slot has faced this season.

There's no question it has been a challenging start to the season for Arne Slot, but the last two games have shown why any talk of his position being under pressure was total nonsense. An elite manager.

Liverpool got absolutely everything they deserved tonight. A fantastic, gritty, classy performance against one of the best teams in Europe and a reminder that the talk of this team’s demise was massively premature.

Liverpool to face Real Madrid: Mamardashvili, Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Salah, Ekitike, Wirtz.

Miserable conditions here at Anfield for the visit of Real Madrid. That might suit Liverpool, who will be looking to make it as hostile as possible for their illustrious visitors this evening.
November 4, 2025 at 4:59 PM
Alexander Isak, Jeremie Frimpong and Alisson Becker still out for Real Madrid. Isak in with a chance for Sunday's visit to Manchester City.
November 3, 2025 at 3:58 PM
I don't think a lucky win would've done anything for Liverpool tonight, they desperately needed to put on an improved performance as well. And Arne Slot got that as his team ended up fully deserved winners thanks to the sort of controlled 2-0 win we saw so often last season.

Liverpool to face Aston Villa: Mamardashvili, Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Salah, Ekitike, Gakpo.

Subs: Woodman, Pecsi, Gomez, Endo, Kerkez, Wirtz, Chiesa, Nyoni, Ngumoha.

Anfield under the lights for what feels like a big one. For all the mitigating factors, Liverpool can’t keep losing games.

Ryan Gravenberch trained yesterday and should be available to face Aston Villa. Curtis Jones and Alexander Isak weren't involved and "99.9% won't be in the squad", Arne Slot says.

Marc Guehi made twice as many passes into the final third (18) as any player last night. But, as much as Liverpool need a passer at the back, they’re also facing an unprecedented aerial bombardment each week. So, would he still be a smart signing?

Would Guehi still be a smart signing for Liverpool?
The Reds came close to acquiring the Englishman over the summer, but their needs have since drastically changed.

Speaking post-match, Arne Slot did not waver in his belief that his selection tonight was the right one. But he will surely only be proven right if Liverpool get desperately needed results and performances against Aston Villa, Real Madrid and Man City.
