Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Lancashire.

Guitarist, snooker nut, keen writer (and reader), nature lover (especially cats).
The Bride Wore Black by Cornell Woolrich. I only read this because of the author’s name 😂, but I ended up thoroughly enjoying it. It has that classic US noir feel, reminiscent of Raymond Chandler, and the plot keeps you guessing right to the end.

Gallows Court by @martinedwardsbooks.bsky.social. This book was slick. The writing is understated but expertly crafted. A twisty mystery with an old-school feel, all brilliantly done. And Rachel Savernake is a fabulously wicked character.

Gangsters of Shanghai by Gerry O’Sullivan. The sense of time and place here is superb. 1920s Shanghai is an exotic, unfamiliar and dangerous world, and a great setting for a thriller. And any book with a severed head in the opening line gets a thumbs up from me.

If you fancy something a bit more modern (well, only 110 years old!), have a look at The Problems of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell.

I’m also a big fan of René Descartes’ Meditations. (Especially Meditations 1 & 2)

Sure! You can’t go wrong with Plato. Probably the most important philosopher of them all. His Republic is a good place to start. 2500 years old, but still very readable.

Thanks. Will do.

He had some crazy views for sure. He banned students from standing on their nail clippings, insisted that swallows should never be allowed in one's house, and said that sex, if it must be indulged in at all, should be reserved for the winter months. And he was obsessed with beans...

I haven't! Sounds like maybe I should take a look...

Sounds like good advice 🙏
