Editing the 17th-century republican woman writer Lucy Hutchinson from Baltimore, Maryland, also fascinated by Scottish, Italian and neo-Latin poetry.
Amongst the books expelled from the US Naval Academy library as too “woke” are studies of gender in Renaissance poetry, with two books discussing the soldier-poet Sir Philip Sidney. His Arcadia is as yet unpurged, but what if they notice that Sidney’s Pyrocles disguises himself as a woman?

How fitting that Pope Francis invoked the poem that stands first in the Italian canon in celebrating the turn to solar energy, a gift we are still fully to receive.

Laudato sie, mi’ Signore, cum tucte le tue creature,
spetialmente messor lo frate sole,
lo qual’è jorno, et allumini noi per lui.
Pope Francis moved last summer to make Vatican City the first nation to run entirely on solar energy.

In his writing, he made it clear that the climate crisis was about power in all forms--and about human dignity.

The world feels much poorer today

This Tax Day, we’ve got one thing to say: Pay up, Exxon 🧾
