I asked my ex for her grandfather’s spätzle recipe so I could make it this year, and she sent me the note file I remember her scrawling on her phone 15 years ago. One instruction had been modified, initially it said “water til wet” and caused trouble when we tried following it.
I nailed it this time

The potato salad log, coleslaw mold, beef in aspic, and honey mustard ring in this photo beg to differ 😛 (You’re right, for the most part, I just love exceptions and will take went opportunity to show off the spread from my midcentury food crimes dinner party a few years back.)

I got curious about the very long building in the second photo. No mention in the wiki article, so I followed the source for the pic itself. Occidental Chemical Company does have a Clearwater, KS address, but it seems to be a different site entirely. Now I’m worried about that green river, though 😳

It was vaccine day and he was such a good sport!

A friend just sent me this, taken as they were driving by today.
The same cactus sign as in the original post, taken from a car on the other side of the road. The Hilltop part is still there but the word Steakhouse has been replaced with small rectangular signs for eight or nine other businesses. The separate sign at the bottom is also now another business, not the (owner? chef? whoever Frank Giuffrida was)’s name.

Finally had one more section of carpet installed to cover up the last of the lead-painted floors in my house. This was a remnant and both the owner of the carpet place and the rug binder came out to measure and make sure there would be enough - they had ~6 sq ft to spare.
Love how it turned out!

The same carpet covers the floor of a small hallway at the top of the stairs. In this light it’s easier to make out the secondary scroll pattern in a lower contrast gray shade. From the photographer’s position partway down the stairs, two bedrooms are visible with their doors open. The walls are somewhat bubbly white-painted wallpaper and wide wooden trim borders the floor and doors.

Antique oven problems 😅 🍽️🍜
The speckled enamel interior of an oven containing an uncooked pizza. About three quarters of the pizza (width-wise, at least, which is the important dimension here) occupies nearly all of the top rack. The remaining section sits on the second rack beneath it. If it matters to anyone, the visible toppings are banana pepper rings and torn-up bits of fresh mozzarella.

Hoping #foodsky can help me find a lost recipe. Last year I hosted a dinner party of midcentury oddities, including an enormous cheese ball decorated to look like a pineapple but which didn’t contain any fruit. Crucially, the outer layer is olives, not pecans. Anybody have a reference or lead? 🍽️

Feeling very insecure today about what may be my normal absent-mindedness or may be the dreaded Pregnancy Brain.

The good news: I harvested my first two zucchini today! Only about a month after transplanting the starts.
The bad news: the fruits were easy to find because 80% of the foliage had been removed by the local deer population 🤬🤬🤬
A raised garden bed containing a zucchini plant and a couple of other cucurbit vines (and a small clump of chard and some spinach that’s gone to seed). Despite the chicken wire around the perimeter of the bed, most of the zucchini plant’s stems end abruptly in bite marks; the only remaining leaves are at ground level. The vine to its right has also been munched. Many yellow flowers and a few immature fruits are now exposed to the viewer.

Performing archaeology in the strata pasted to my upstairs bedroom walls. I’d have been happy if either of the floral patterns or even the country village one were still up, but alas, the most recent layer was faux wood paneling that was slowly parting ways with the wall. Down to plaster we go.

Several layers of old wallpaper. There’s a patch of the brown flecks, but most of the frame is a pattern of quaint town buildings with suggestions of iron fences and tin or thatch roofs. In the center is a portion of a much more boldly rendered black and brown horse, wearing a bridle, on a green background. The oldest wallpaper layer, tattered from our removal efforts, is a very old fashioned pink rose with green leaves on a yellowed background. There’s a lacy border to the left and right that suggests the roses and lace were arranged in alternating vertical stripes. More of the village pattern, in less focus because I was zoomed in up near the ceiling. There are clusters of yellow flowers and a house with an iron-railed balcony.

I would be a lot more enchanted by this if he weren’t in the habit of treating my yard and garden as his personal salad bar.
