my understanding is that it might cause some of your floats to tweak out a bit if you have larger maps. this was a problem in the game Outer Wilds, where by not doing so you'll likely get floating point errors

it's not something i've tried, however

i actually love this, my brain would love to see some burst vfx when a die finishes rolling so you see a bunch of little circular waves when multiple finish rolling at the same time

No it totally does! It’s something that is definitely a factor based on the paints and things you do.

Historically we get around it by doing some photo edits to the normal map photo once it’s captured depending on the colors of the object to make sure colors are vibrant

yeah that’s basically what I do to capture normal maps for physical models in the game im working on, but you could absolutely apply it to just capturing materials on a surface
