A Ghost In Your Ear matinee at the Hampstead. Disappointing for me. An unoriginal mix of The Woman in Black, Ringu, The Dead Room and Darkfield's binaural performances. The narrative element takes place in the Pennines yet all northern characters are, yet again, deleted from the story.

The Rivals at @orangetreetheatre.bsky.social tonight, starring Patricia Hodge, Robert Bathurst, Kit Young & Zoe Brough. Superb performances all round. One of the funniest comedies I've ever seen. A brilliant 10/10 production.

Visited vegan restaurant Unity Diner in Shoreditch tonight. Food was sensationally good. 10/10 recommendation from me. Definitely going back to try their vegan carvery on a Sunday.

Fox and magpie enjoying Highgate Cemetery today.

New Year's Day. 1st visit to Highgate Cemetery. Beautifully gothic graves and statuary in what is almost a forest. Saw foxes, magpies, robins and wrens. The guided tour was superb. If you've never been, just go - it's a nature and history lovers delight.

Final play of the year - matinee of A Christmas Carol at The Old Vic. Good when it stuck to Dickens' superb original, poor when it used Jack Thorne's horribly clunking, expositional, vastly inferior script. Talented cast. Paul Hilton good as always. Staging and music superb.

Since Bird Photography is trending, here's another photo of the robin we spotted on Boxing Day in the Barbican Wildlife Garden.

The office was closed in a twinkling, and the clerk, with the long ends of his white comforter dangling below his waist (for he boasted no great-coat), went down a slide on Cornhill, at the end of a lane of boys, twenty times, in honour of its being Christmas Eve. - A Christmas Carol

Fallen Angels at The Menier Chocolate Factory tonight. 100 years old & as funny as when Noël Coward wrote it. Superb comedic performances from Janie Dee, Alexandra Gilbreath, Christopher Hollis, Richard Teverson, Sarah Twomey & Graham Vick. V funny, hugely recommended.

Preview of The Room in the Tower at the BFI tonight, this year's A Ghost Story for Christmas, adapted from E. F. Benson, followed by Q&A with Dr. Matthew Sweet, Mark Gatiss and Ben Mansfield. It's a decent effort, creepy and nicely filmed.

Twelfth Night at the Barbican tonight. A very mixed bag. Humour did not work, and some bizarre staging and acting decisions. However, Gwyneth Keyworth and Samuel West very good, and Freema Agyeman sensational.

1st preview of Indian Ink at Hampstead Theatre. Last play produced with Sir Tom Stoppard's involvement. 1st Stoppard play to be staged after his death. Moving to see old Eleanor played by Felicity Kendal, who created the role of young Flora in the original 1995 production.

"Well, I'm dead."

RIP Sir Tom Stoppard. How lucky were we to see previews of his plays with Sir Tom in attendance: Travesties, Hapgood, The Invention of Love, & even got an autograph at Rock 'n' Roll. Loved that he was always first out of the theatre to smoke his cigarettes. Our writing hero.
