And having supervised the production of front pages for a very good newspaper for many years, I can tell you that if there's anything editors hate more than having to tear up the preplanned front page, it's looking clueless--as the NYT does today.

This convenient analysis ignores the inconvenient fact that this protest was much anticipated as news because it was uncertain how large the participation would be and whether the events would in fact be peaceful. Given that, a good editor would simply have preserved a prominent place for it.
