Metrology, product safety, bamboo, baking. Occasional dabbler in esoteric technology. Alive since 345 ppm.
Pavlova try 2. Made 4 of this size, and added chocolate on request :) #baking #Australia

The integrity of the US metrology traceability system is anchored by NIST. This is a profound tragedy that will amplify negative effects of the illegal federal layoffs. All science and transportation agencies, not to mention DoD rely on NIST daily.

Experimental Brioche. Turned out OK...Grating butter did wonders for the smoothness. But holy mother of oven pop/rise. That was unexpected. #bread #breadsky #baking

of great interest
Now that the Assad regime in Damascus has fallen, we see that the Iranian Suezmax tanker LOTUS (9203784) has made a u-turn in the Gulf of Suez. She was due to deliver ~750K barrels of Iranian crude to Syria but is now returning to Iran. Fuels shortages expected. #OOTT

This poem by Mary Robinson, published in The Morning Post in 1800, addressed to that newspaper's "Type," really must be the only poem about a typeface (as well as in a typeface) written in the #19thc.
(But, gosh, I would be happy to hear of others.)
Here are the first 2 stanzas.

Well #booksky, this is in fact a Children's book. I'm guessing in 1995, children's publisher editors were not as in tune with some slang. Though the main character is Mr. Bear... Maybe they were?

New paper: Do social media algorithms shape affective polarization?

We ran a field experiment on X/Twitter (N=1,256) using LLMs to rerank content in real-time, adjusting exposure to polarizing posts. Result: Algorithmic ranking impacts feelings toward the political outgroup! 🧵⬇️

Baking. Somehow it is an art and a science. Neither of which I seem to have mastered. But I can keep yeast happy and bubbly, so there is that...

Do your Christmas light have a safety certification? They should have a UL, ETL, MET or other US NRTL mark. If they don't, they may start fires or shock you. Remember too: the CE mark means nothing in the US and is often fraudulently used. @cpsc.gov has good info for a safe Christmas.

This is why I'm liking BlueSky...subject matter experts sharing relevant and factual background on a topic. Shame the NYT editors are incapable or unwilling to do their jobs. RIP the Grey Lady.
