Well #booksky, this is in fact a Children's book. I'm guessing in 1995, children's publisher editors were not as in tune with some slang. Though the main character is Mr. Bear... Maybe they were?

Do your Christmas light have a safety certification? They should have a UL, ETL, MET or other US NRTL mark. If they don't, they may start fires or shock you. Remember too: the CE mark means nothing in the US and is often fraudulently used. @cpsc.gov has good info for a safe Christmas.
