Factoid: Lee Greenwood had two #1 country hits just before "God Bless The USA"--which only reached #7. Then Reagan's re-election team pimped it for patriotic votes, which led to far-higher sales than any other #7 record. That said, the line "at least I know I'm free" was truer 40 years ago than now.
