message from the LA County Sheriffs Department which I will summarize briefly because this is an "I ain't reading all that situation." Some Deputy Friendly went to a coffee shop and someone drew a pig on his cup and now apparently the whole fucking department is triggered and the writer of this missive is very upset that he had to find a safe space for this guy to feel better about himself. Anyway it's cool that no one in Los Angeles had any actual crimes to work on so that so many different cops could devote so much time to helping this piss baby out.

I'm convinced they believe that they are buttressing democracy by casting these votes. Naturally, the alternative is that they support the president's agenda in whole or in part.

Why would 13 Democrats (and Maine independent Angus King, who I find too tiresome to explain to people) do such a thing? My theory is this: In their own skewed, Senate-brained view of the world, taking these kinds of votes helps to bolster democracy. That is to say, any time there is a small window in which they can make a gesture of comity and bipartisanship, they believe the right thing to do is to take it—the better to demonstrate that the ol’ ship of state is still humming along, normal business and regular order is possible, and that we aren’t so far off from recovery. Democrats are leaving the door to deliberation open. They’re keeping that saucer on ice.

While I'm not surprised that people in the drooling, infirm president's company are saying such things, I don't actually believe this, especially in light of significant reporting indicating that the administration always intended to hand things off to the Chavismo faction they'd bought off.

Although Machado ultimately said she was dedicating the award to Trump, her acceptance of the prize was an “ultimate sin,” said one of the people. “If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” this person said.

I was intrigued by Washington Post C.T.O. Vineet Khosla’s take on the much-maligned rollout of the Post’s A.I. tools — which, as Semafor has reported, are furnishing readers and podcast listeners with inaccuracies and fabricated quotes. The conventional response here would be a hasty recall and mea culpa, but Khosla is standing firm and saying the company will “iterate through the remaining issues.” In a recent interview with The Rebooting’s Brian Morrissey, Khosla cast the media’s obsession with accuracy as an impediment to innovation. Whereas the tech instinct is to ship, observe, and iterate, the media instinct — or, really, the journalistic instinct — is to prevent error. “Getting something slightly wrong is not the end of the world [in tech],” Khosla said, “but getting something slightly wrong in the world of media is often perceived as the end of the world.” I can hear the J-school crowd hyperventilating here, but it’s worth noting that this reflexively risk-averse mindset is precisely why investors typically hate media — and why it often takes the industry so long to catch up to changes in consumer behavior.

The Wiles interview fuels the idea that events are leading Trump rather than the other way around. Over the last few weeks the White House has suffered a series of setbacks on everything from Congress voting to compel the release of the Epstein files to the courts tossing out cases against New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey. The third person said there is a lot of GOP frustration that the White House seems undisciplined at a time it needs to hammer its accomplishments on the economy.

I’m familiar enough with the people who do “persuasion work” in Democratic politics to say this with some certainty: They don’t think high-profile Democrats should spend any time on Rob Reiner. They think Democrats should be stoic all the time, even when Trump heaps abuse on American icons. Their job, as Democrats, is to eat shit over and over again, to never stand up for their own people, because target voters don’t care about Hollywood or Washington elites. These voters say their biggest concerns in life are health care and the cost of living. Building a groundswell of outrage on behalf of a murdered celebrity, and directing it at Republicans, may feel satisfying, but it lacks discipline. I think this conception of persuasion is wrong in general, and in this instance, it’s wrong for at least four specific reasons:

The Washington Post began putting out AI-generated podcasts even after internal tests found that the AI tech introduced errors and bias into the publication’s reporting. More than two-thirds of scripts generated by the feature, dubbed “Your Personal Podcast,” failed a metric intended to determine whether they met the publication’s standards, according to a readout of the tests shared with Semafor. “Testers were asked to rate the quality of scripts on a pass/fail basis (news used the categorization of publishable vs. not) in order to give us the most comprehensive list of issues to examine,” the company said in its internal review. The review added that when in doubt, testers told to fail scripts “as a precaution.” In three rounds of testing, between 68% and 84% of scripts failed. Four Washington Post staff also described mistakes in personalized podcasts ranging from minor pronunciation issues to misattributed or fabricated quotes, as Semafor reported Thursday. The tool also sometimes inserts commentary, they said — for instance, by interpreting a source’s quotes as the paper’s position on an issue.

WaPo's wheel-reinvention team is launching an opinion aggregator called Ripple. At first glance, there are a lot of op-ed pieces from THE HILL on it and if you're familiar with the quality of those pieces (the null set of quality) then you'll wonder: "But why."
