We've had to debug our NPCs doing strange things like endlessly toggling light switches, or opening/closing doors.

Turns out, the machine learning algo we gave them to associate mood changes per action noticed a big boost as they did some mundane action.

They were stuck trying to chase that high.

We each twist alone in space, cut off from whatever we once knew as home. What diminished life can we yet live? Whose hands can we yet reach through the inky void?

I don't wanna say it'll be a home-run of a fit, but Ostranauts does try to tick several checkboxes in that vicinity!

Screenshot of a top-down, pixel art game, where the main character stands in an airlock between their own, well-lit ship (bottom of screen) and a dark derelict (upper screen). Screenshot of a blue navigation panel for a spaceship, with several buttons, toggles, sliders, and knobs to monitor and control various aspects of space travel. Screenshot of a top-down, pixel art game where the main character is standing near a counter in a warmly-lit bar, talking to an NPC. The NPC has an ! near it, like a quest marker, and there is a context menu of possible things to say near them. Screenshot of a muted gray reactor control panel, showing various LED and 7-segment display readouts, plus a range of sliders, knobs, and buttons to control the reactor.

someone JUST has to make Jalopy-but-with-spaceships, man. I want to pick up a shitty hyperdrive from a dude behind a diner. I want a cockpit dashboard cluttered with loose cans and toolboxes.

Thanks for playing it, and for the kind words! Definitely want to return to that arc after Ostranauts is done.

For the assets, I did a lot (most?) of the sprites, if that's what you mean? Illustrations in encounters are a mix of me and other artists. Ditto for encounter text. Josh Culler did OST.

this game is really good

I think you're right that, depending on which thresholds you set for:
1. Min play duration for review
2. Max play duration for refund
3. Max refund rate before delisting

*someone* is going to fall through the cracks. But I think with testing and iterating, you could probably minimize those cases.
dcfedor.bsky.social
Why? You got your money back. No harm done.

If it's to warn other users, this is only important if it's a large enough percentage. And a large percentage of refunds leads to the game being pulled.

A low percentage of crashes is unlikely to affect anyone reading the review, right?
dcfedor.bsky.social
Isn't that what refunds are for, though?

If a small percentage of users crash before the threshold, that might not be the game's fault.

If a large number crash, it'll either appear as low reviews or high refunds. And Epic would likely remove a game above a certain refund rate.
dcfedor.bsky.social
Theoretically, if the game crashes for everyone, it'll be captured by random selection.
If it only crashes for some users, that capture rate scales down.
If the game doesn't work at all for anyone, no reviews. So, it might self correct?
