On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we hear many voices seeking to undermine his legacy, including the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. Dr. King's work was never finished; it was merely interrupted.

Martin Luther King, Jr. dedicated his life to advocating tirelessly for the justice and equality of Black Americans and resisting elected leaders’ deliberate abuse and neglect of our communities. He was relentlessly targeted by our government for his views and pursuit of equality.

Once we considered ourselves part of the "democratic camp."
Now what we list is a string of authoritarian states.
What has changed is not merely our diplomatic partners,
but our very understanding of the word "democracy."
