This is extremely alarming. Prime Minister @mark-carney.bsky.social won the federal election promising to make us *less* depending on the US. Now we are hearing reports that he is offering up a CLOSER energy and military partnership in exchange for a trade deal... 🧵

Relief for Canada from U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum may come thanks to renewed interest in a pipeline project first proposed more than 15 years ago.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

The government is shooting priests in the head with pepper balls. I feel like this is a kitchen table issue.

Finally got around to finishing this. Surprisingly for Fitzpatrick I found the Stalin material the least interesting and thought she could have done more on the revolution and Lenin, but the Brezhnev, Gorbachev, and Putin chapters were all good reads.

An interesting note where Felix Guattari compares Donald Trump as real estate mogul to algae (from The Three Ecologies, originally published in 1989).

I mean I think reporting on the leadership of the World Evangelical Alliance earns the use of the term.
deandettloff.bsky.social
Or at least, it's about tracing the influence of Middle Eastern evangelicals on the global evangelical movement, which seems pretty relevant right now specifically.
deandettloff.bsky.social
But it's not about US evangelical Christianity per se, it's about evangelicalism in the Middle East. Kuttab is a longtime Palestinian Christian journalist who knows his region well. Reducing "evangelicalism" to its US expressions is unhelpful, unless I'm misunderstanding you here.

Absolutely but Italy also has like three times the union density, which is to say if you want to build a movement that no government can ignore you should lean into building the labor movement.

important for us in the US to note: even a solidly right wing government can't ignore this.

The Canadian government wants you to think postal workers and services are a waste of money and therefore tons of good jobs and access to mail ought to get the axe but the murder industry is a good investment for all Canadians. It's an insult to public intelligence.

You know the thing about evolution is that it can also end up causing an organism to be so specifically adapted to a particular set of conditions that it eventually goes extinct.

Happy birthday to my favorite agnostic Catholic, novelist Graham Greene, born in 1904.

He wrote: “You cannot conceive, nor can I, of the appalling strangeness of the mercy of God.”

To be fair, so does Augustine! (Albeit not so enthusiastically.)
deandettloff.bsky.social
There's an essay to be written about how this is actually an inter-Augustinian conflict.
A screenshot of user @AustDR's full reply to @Pontifex. It reads:

I reject this whole heartedly. What you fail to see Mr Pope, the Bible says the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can understand it?
What you said sounds catchy and “profound”, but we don’t return to the heart. We command our heart to be in full submission to the Word of God and to be obedient to the will of God. Only then do we experience true freedom and a faith not based on feelings, as you suggest.
